X40 For Full Time Use?

I am a graduate student and I will be starting school in March. I really like the X40 but I was wondering if it would be too small to use as a full time computer. I was thinking that if I got the docking station for it as well as a monitor then I might be able to make it work. Also, I will be going to school overseas (Sydney, Australia) and I need something that I will be able to take on the plane and use as well as something to carry on a bus, subway, etc. since I will be a commuter. Basically it has come down to the X40 or the T42. If anyone uses the X40 full time (as there main computer) let me know what you think!!

If all your going to be doing is document work and internet then I would say x40.

I love my X40 but i can't live without my gaming/workstation rig. If you want to game as well, and want to elivate the burden of carrying a dock then get a t42.

I have used both an x40 and a t42, as much as i love my x40, if you can have only 1 computer then get a t42.

the definition of a laptop to me is a compliment to a desktop, so if you had a desktop in the dorm, but a x40 for the road then thats ok.

if your going to have only one machine get a t42.

i love my x40, light as a feather and fast enough for word firefox and vb .net, also encarta, all i ever use/need in college here in the states.

Well, I'm a prof and I use it full time. Since I got mine a few months back, I've only really used my desktop in my office as a dynamic backup. I use the X40 at home to write (and internet stuff with our wireless network at home), I bring it work and use it there on our LAN. It's bloody brill. I initially thought it would be too small to use on a daily basis, but I got used to it quite quickly.

Good luck in Aus with your studies. IBM Australia gives EXCELLENT support should you have any problems. In fact, if you do, PM me and I'll give you the name of the guy I've dealt with (he just bought himself a T42, but really wanted an X40, so you'll have to make sure to rub it in!).

So would the X40 be good even for writing and compiling code on a regular basis. How about for multi-media? If I wanted to play the occasional game or watch a DVD, can the X40 handle the task? When I say game I don't mean like Doom3, I mean more like a strategy game (something that is not extremely graphics intensive)! Basically what it boils down to is this:

I use my X40 for Java, and occasionally play Age of Empires 2 and Unreal Tournament with no signs of lagging. As well, watching movies full screen is absolutely no problem. Small, yet good enough for me. However, if you want to use it for Photoshop or 3D autoCAD, it is hopeless.

I use Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10 on mine. Granted, I'm not doing any crazy rendering or high-level graphics editing (basically simple photo editing and line drawings for books), but it runs fast enough for my tastes.

I program with my X40 everyday. At least 6 hours of use each day. And you can play StarCraft on it quite nicely .

I got my X40 this June, after my freshman year. So far in this semester, I haven't used my desktop for anything but music, the occasionaly movie, and ONE session of Counter-Strike. I plan on selling my desktop, evevn though it's a fairly nice machine.
