Largest HD for X40/41?

#1 Post by daeojkim » Fri Jun 15, 2007 11:17 am

I am thinking of getting an X40/41, but I would like to have a large hard drive. I know there are a lot 1.8" 4200 rpm drives out there. What the largest 1.8" HD compatible with X40/41? to my knowledge it's 80GB, but I wanted to see if there is some new info out there.

Thanks in advance.

To my knowledge, it's only the 60GB. However, you can use higher capacity drives in 2.5" format in the X4 Ultrabase with a drive caddy.

I would imagine the only chance of an upgrade is from the solid state arena. I believe 32GB solid state drives are made that would work, but they cost about $1K. Greater capacity and lower cost is always promised in the future.

Bottom line, you're looking at 60GB internal on the road maximum - - - well, plus whatever fits on one SD card! :)

P.S. For travel, I'm quite happy with my X40 w/1.4GHz, Dothan, 1GB, 60GB, Bluetooth.

Underclocker,

Thanks for the info. I guess I will be stuck with 60GB max.

I am in a big dilemma because I can't decide between X31/32 and X40/41. Although I prefer X4x series due to its light weight, the biggest worry that I have is HD speed. I don't do anything intensive, it will be mostly web browsing, office applications, and listening to music. Well I will have to make the decision pretty soon...

For your use, I think the X40 should do fine speedwise. But keep in mind that the size/weight difference is smaller if you want to use the 8-cell X40 battery (the standard 4 cell barely lasts 3 hours). While I love my X40 to death, they're generally more expensive and slower than the X31, and the 1.8" drive is a big disadvantage, as 2.5" HDs are big, fast, cheap and sold everywhere. In fact, with the current selection of cheap X31's on eBay, I'm thinking of adding one to my collection myself :).

Some have noted on the forum that battery life might be best with a Dothan X40 when it comes to the X4x series.

My only recommendation is don't touch an X40/X41 if you're still considering an X31/X32. The X4x's are so light and perfectly designed, you won't like the X3x's anymore. Mine really does weigh 2.7lbs.

Prices are getting similar to the X3x's, a great X41 just sold on this forum for $550 (or less).

X40's with some warranty remaining have been selling on eBay for just over $400 and up.

I am not sure if you need an adapter/converter for this 100gb 1.8" hard drive to be able to mount on your X40/X41 laptop though.

Besides it's very expensive.

There's NO WAY the Toshibas (or the Hitachis with a ZIF connector) are going to fit inside an X40. Can't this be made a sticky, as it seems to come up so often? AFAIK, the ONLY drives that will fit inside the X40 are the Hitachi C4K40 and C4K60 with IDE connector (and perhaps some 1.8" flash modules.)

Between the X3x and X4x the size and weight difference isn't that great on paper, but in real life it is very noticeable.

I used to have an X41 (back when they were new and expensive), currently have an X31 (sold, broke it, fixed it, ready to resell) and miss the X41 so much that I bought another one. The X41 just feels more modern, even though its a bit slower.

Also, while the X31 and X32 have dedicated VRAM, the integrated graphics in the X41 are actually a lot more advanced.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Now I will have to look around to find a decent X40/41 somewhere.

I was thinking about why a ZIF to 44pin IDE adapter cant be used on a X41 and a fast 1.8HDD?

Because the connector on the X40 drive are on the wide edge of the drive, while on the ZIF drives they're on the narrow edge. I don't think there's enough room inside the X40 to place the cable and the adapter.

Maybe...

But the cable between the ZIF and IDE connectors is flexible and thin.

Im not sure its impossible to place the ZIF HD by side (like the X41 original HD) and connect the 44pins IDE.

Off course its only can be checked by an user with a X41 + ZIF 1.8HD + ZIF-IDE adapter and an adventure spirit 8))

But there is the FW compatability problem also...
