X31 Questions

#1 Post by 7a7Thinkpad » Mon Jun 18, 2007 1:50 pm

Hello All,

I've made the jump and acquired an X31, with that said I have a few questions. My first question is how do I determine if I have wireless on the machine? I have two black serrated antenna looking things on the side of the screen, and what looks like a radio tower on the same bar as the battery icon. I've also down loaded the wireless drivers from the IBM website and still nothing connection wise.

Any and all help will be appericiated!

Hardware troubleshooting is always the easiest... Unscrew the keyboard, lift it out, and see if you have a card in the mini-PCI slot.

You could also check under
Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager. Your wireless card would be located under "Network Adapters".

Thanks for the suggestions!

I assumed that the radio antenna icon was the indicator that it was wifi capable, it looks like I was wrong  So now I have to decide to A) purchase a pc adaptor or B) exchange it for a T40 or T42 that are in stock? I really like the size of the X31, and the screen is clear, no dead pixels or white spots like that of my other laptop. Something to think about!

Thanks,

As an 1-month old owner of an X31, my biased recommendation would be to keep yours! Simply purchase a mini-PCI wireless adapter ...Atheros a/b/g is a popular upgrade. You can find them on Ebay quite frequently. Search these forums for instructions on which cards are compatible and/or require a CMOS patch.

To clarify, does it have the antennas for a wifi card? If not, you have to buy antennas and a wireless card.

I thought it had the antennas, I have two black, slash cut, protruding pieces of plastic on the side of the screen. That plus there's a tower icon on the systray, which also adding to my assumption :|

I'm looking forward to learning alot about this and other ThinkPads.

Thanks

If you remove the keyboard (consult the HMM for instructions) you will see whether there are antenna leads in place next to the MiniPCI slot. If there are, adding a MiniPCI card is trivially easy; if not, it's still possible to add antennas but it will be more work.

Just comment on subject line; X31 Questions :D

No questions, X31 is just great... today finally I add 1GB RAM so my baby is now running on 1,5GB and difference is rather noticable (XP SP2), it has already 7k100 HDD, P M 1.6, BT, IBM b/g (Atheros)... otherwise 2673 CTO.

Do you have a wireless network adapter listed in Device Manager (or a yellow question mark - unknown device)? Does the "tower" icon (on the black bar underneath the screen - not in the system tray) light up? If yes to any of these, it sounds like you have a wifi card already installed.
