Trackpoint and Standby

#1 Post by Elwyn » Sat Jun 23, 2007 4:57 pm

Hi Folks

Got a new X30 here, but have noticed a few small problems.

One of them is that the laptop won't got standby as it cites errors wit Stratford upon Avon

With Stratford upon Avon? Hmmm, seems like a very localised problem, then -- maybe you could try going into standby in another city? :D  :D

More seriously, it looks like your post is missing some critical information about the symptoms. When you add that, can you also specify whether you have a clean Windows install or an existing one?

Oh dear

I am really terribly sorry. Last night I was totally shattered and didn't think so, but was typing with my eyes closed... But I was trying to get it sorted...

Right. Um. Sorry. Really. Sorry :( And my first post too

Right. Try again.

When I close the lid, the machine goes into standby right? Well, this won't because it tells me that there is a problem with the trackpoint. I'll do some more searching today on this....

Nothing to do with Stratford upon Avon. I don't even know how that got in there :(

Well. Having another look around (this time awake  ) I found this.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=23037

But it describes a fault with standby/hibernation. However, it does give a few options to start with and try so I'll try that later on.

The whole machine and wireless is wonderfully good and even for theis "low spec" machine it handles fine ;)

It's got 40gb HDD, 512mb RAM, wifi via PCMCIA Belkin 54g card. No docking station, lan cable, modem cable or anything like that in there....

Cheers

Are you working with a clean Windows XP install, or one that the previous owner was running?

Hi Elwyn,

I recently installed Windows XP on a X30 w/o dock using a simple old ext CD/DVD drive and hooked it up via USB. Then I've chosen "boot from CD/DVD" (hit F12) and it setup ran from CD. Installation was a bit boring since X30 comes w/ USB1.1. But I got Windows XP installed clean. So keep on trying it's definitely possible

So the general consensus is then that I probably have an unwell installation that has all of this preinstall muck on here and need a fresh install.

Ok, that can be managed.

I've got a code on the bottom of the lappy. Will most discs take this code, and do I need to "authenticate" or anything with MS?  Sorry, bit of a newbie with windows installls :(

That's the fact in many cases of pre-installed stuff. So I prefer to go my own way flushing a clean installation on my notebook.

I'd suggest follow way:

- Make a "clean" XP install directly from CD
- Add Service Pack 2 (if not exist already)
- Go thru the "Driver Matrix" for X30 on Lenovo Website and download only the essential things you'll really need.

Ok, that can be managed.

If you own an IBM Windows XP Disc it might work out. Normaly conventional XP Discs will refuse such licenses since the key on the bottom is a so called OEM license key that works w/ OEM Disc only. Maybe you should read this to solve that problem...?

Right. Well. I tried the "clean reinstall" option. But the CD drives I have here are all tied up doing stuff and I was unable to extract any (else the wrath of Sister would envelope me   )

But I did do a full update. Yaay for Autopatchers ;)

And I've just found now that it has sorted it. For now. By accidentaly pressing Fn-F4 rather than Alt-F4

Back to being happy with this little cutie :D Cheers and thanks for the help and patience ;)
