X20 random beeping

#1 Post by GnatGoSplat » Fri Jun 29, 2007 9:49 am

I picked up a used X20 from someone on this forum.
It works great, no problems. I did notice something kind of odd. It beeps randomly. I don't notice this at all in Windows, but when I had DOS booted up, it did it several times. It's a soft beep, not real obvious, it sounds like a low-volume system beep and it's happened several times. The area with the CPU air vent gets really hot, so I wondered if it's a warning beep of the CPU overheating. The CPU area doesn't get very hot when Windows is running, but I've read somewhere that Windows has a way to keep CPUs cooler when idle.

It works fine so I'm not worried about it, I just found it odd and wonder what's the cause?

Another odd thing is Ghost can't detect external USB hard drives with the X20, although it can with my much older 570. The USB port I've verified works fine in Windows, so it's very strange that the 570 is more "modern" when it comes to BIOS support of USB drives.

I'm not sure what to tell you about the system beep in DOS, but with regard to Ghost, have you enabled USB support in the X20 BIOS?

I have used external USB optical drives to boot that laptop before without any issues as far as I remember. I was able to run Knoppix from an external CD drive just fine.

Yeah, it's strange. Everything works fine in Windows, but I couldn't force it to boot my DVD-ROM drive either. It might just be incompatible with my USB to IDE convertors for some reason, although I have two completely different ones and neither worked.
