X22 External Antenna

#1 Post by TomKroscavage » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:05 pm

I was thinking of adding an external antenna with this pigtail mounted buy the left hinge and, behind the audio jacks.

My main concern is the mmcx connection strong enough?

I believe that the MMCX connection is not really rated for a high number or frequent connect-disconnect actions. Also, that type of connector will usually allow the plug to rotate freely so assuming you find an MMCX whip antenna, it might not stay "upright". The RP-SMA jack that I used in a 600X is probably too big for mounting anywhere in an X22. I have one (an X22, that is) but it's put together right now. When my US keyboard arrives in a few days, I'll open 'er up and see if there's any room. I'm actually planning on putting an internal antenna somewhere in the system.

In my rush to install the new US keyboard, I didn't spend that much time poking around the innards of the X22 to see if there is room for ANY type of antenna connector. With the downward angled sides on the bottom case of the X22, it would be hard to mount something on the sides without the antenna hitting the surface that the laptop is sitting on. The back panel could support an antenna jack, if room can be found inside, but that would mean that use of a port replicator/docking station is excluded.

When I get some spare time, I'm going to look into replacing the MiniPCI modem with a wireless card and putting some antennas inside the case or LCD. I've currently got one of my D-Link PCMCIA cards working so it's not a high priority item.

I had an idea regarding an external antenna. I don't know the feasibility (it's a bit hack-ish), but maybe it could work.

what it really boils down to is, how likely are you to use the RJ-11 jack on your X-22? particularly once you have wireless. it seemed to me (looking at my X-24) that it might be possible to either...

1: remove the contacts from the RJ-11 jack, and permanently mount an RJ-11 plug there, with some type of external antenna connector on it, which is in turn connected to the wifi card.

2: same as 1, but possibly make the external antenna removable (not just unscrewing it, but actually making the RJ-11 plug removable). that's the part where the feasibility gets questionable.

Interesting idea about using the RJ-11 jack. 8)
