X21 LCD Help needed

#1 Post by wilsonhs » Wed Jul 18, 2007 12:59 pm

My X21 LCD started to have problem today.
I turned on the X21, the LCD Backlight splash for one second(LCD display was normal for one second)
then the back light goes off, with the display, i can still see color and the figure
like booting and into windows (of cause there is no light, i can only see a little of the image)

i tried to turn it off and on, removed harddisk, ram and bios battery
i also took off the keyboard and replug all the cables
that made sure all the connections are normal

I dunt know what the Heck is going on....

can any one tell me what is in failure and what can i do? i sure its not bios setting problem.
The Backlight can trun on for one second everytime when seeing Thinkpad logo on startup, but will then at once goes off.
I wonder its the backlight high-voltage control board or somewhere else problem....

Anyway, thanks evryone

The backlight just died :( !

There is two things you can do:
1. Get a New LCD
2. Fix the backlight!

I'm not sure how to fix the back light but someone on the forum should know how!!

Fixing the backlight is the cheapest way to go if you can do it your self but you teke the risk of doing more damage!

You can find X21 LCD's for around $85 Shipped like HERE!

You might me able to find a better deal on Hong Kong ebay!
Or even better deal in the forum marketplace!

Keep an eye out for the lcd that come with just the LCD pannel because that way you can same a little money!

Regards and good luck,

Matthew

excuse me,
i wonder its the backlight tube problem or the electricity contrl board's problem?
coze i want to make it sure first before any purchases of parts.
both replacement, i know how to DIY if the parts are available, as the backlight tubes were changed by myself on a HYUNDAI LCD.

but one thing i am worrying is that, as the tube is able to splash on for a second,so i wonder its really theproblem of the tube or the control boards problem.
thanks alot

About five things can go wrong that result in the symptoms you describe:

- the backlight (CCFL) has died; it must be replaced either by taking apart the panel and changing the ~$20 lamp or by replacing the entire panel >$100.
- the inverter has failed; it can be replaced fairly easily and generally costs about $15-$20.
- the lcd cable is broken; a little bit tougher to replace and about the same price, if not a little more than the inverter.
- the lid switch is stuck; easy to check by pushing on it a couple of times to see if it's stuck down (doesn't cost anything either!)
- some problem on the motherboard is causing the lack of power to the inverter and therefore no light

thanks for above,i have consulted a shop, and it say the same words: (1) Invertor
(2) cablefailure

i wonder that i should repair it myself or not, coze the shop say they are supplying Universal Invertors, that i have to modify the cableswhen installing the invertor cost me about USD 20
or they change it for me cost it 50USD....
big variation between it and seems too costly....

I wonder where can i get the invertor which is OEM or IBM and need not any Mod in cables....thanks
