X21 - What is the OS of Choice?

#1 Post by billp117 » Mon Jul 23, 2007 9:47 pm

I just picked up a dead X21 and got it going last night using XP.
My new 60 gig Fugitsu HD came in handy. It has 128 meg of memory and I will increase that to 384 next week.

Do most of the owners of the X21 use XP? Since I have XP working OK (slow however)...I would assume the 384 meg of memory will help speed things up. I have the 700 Mhz processor and a docking unit. I would like to avoid installing Win98se.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I had an X21 with 384MB RAM and I ran XP Pro on it. Use the Classic Theme, adjust visual effects for best performance, and set the display's color depth to 16-bit. The original HDD is most likely 4200rpm. Upgrade it to a 5400rpm one. Coolname1 is selling a bunch of 60GB 5400rpm drives for only $28 plus postage.

I believe he already did.

To the OP are you willing to go with linux?
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

I played with Ubuntu for a while but had problems getting all the drivers. Perhaps some time in the future I will figure it out.

Thanks for the advice.
