Laptop Care

#1 Post by LumberJack » Thu Oct 21, 2004 6:42 pm

Hey guys...

A lot of people on this forum have been somewhat mentioning stuff about laptop care here and there. I really take good care of my laptop and it seems so do a lot of people. Just wondering what you guys do to actually clean the laptop, take care of the screen etc?

Any and all ideas are welcome. So far Im jsut following IBM's recommendations in the users manual.

Go to the home page for the forums.

Choose the first forum which is called "READ ME FIRST FAQ then post".

Choose "FAQ (thinkpads.com - Frequently Asked Questions).

Read item #18.

Reading the other 20 items is optional but useful.

I'm going to assume you were looking for more than the bog-standard reference to the FAQ that some people tend to always suggest. So, to answer your initial enquiry...

I'm actually a fanatic when it comes to the keyboard of my X40. I find myself using these (http://tinyurl.com/5zz9w)
on an almost daily basis, sometime two times a day. As I use mine daily and almost all day, I trying to prevent grease build-up on the keyboard. I also use these to wipe down the casing. They work quite well.

I'm a little less anal about the screen. That usually gets a quick wipe every two days using one of those cloths for eyeglasses.

I've just ordered a Notebook Screensaver from RadTech (https://www.radtech.us/Products/Noteboo ... savrz.aspx) based on the recommendation in one of these threads, even though I don't have a problem with the trackpoint leaving marks because I don't use it.

Cheers!

Well, there's a reason it's called Frequently Asked Questions, you know...

I dampen a small portion of a t-shirt from the laundry basket and give it all a good wiping unless there's a lint free one within reach. Don't get me wrong, I love this little laptop, have had it for about 4 years now and have no reason to look at others.

:) yes, and as useful as it is, it is illogical to assume that answers to subjective (but useful) questions such as the one posted by our (new) member Lumberjack can and should only be found there, thus negating any need for any other input.

It's a darn fine FAQ, though, to be sure...

I realize that I seem snarky constantly pointing people to the FAQ, but I tend to operate under the "teach a man to fish" rather than "give a man a fish" principle. When someone asks something that has been asked a thousand times already and doesn't give any indication that they've checked out what's in the FAQ already and want to pursue it further, they get the standard RTFM answer. It comes from the latent teacher in me and from years of being Level 3 corporate support and tiring of frantic calls that start with someone wanting me to call the manufacturer and end with finding out the mouse isn't plugged in.

Thanks for the nice words about the FAQ, though! It's the compilation of years of many peoples' answers from many different venues.

Yeah...

I did actually read the FAQ page. I just assumed that not everyone would agree to what is written there, but I guess you all do. Now as for specifics, thanks to those who actually said the brand of stuff they use, I will look into it.
