X41 vs. X60

#1 Post by Mitchell » Mon Jul 30, 2007 4:25 pm

Hello all:

My dilemma is that my ex- has kindly offered to buy my X41 (4 months old) and replace it with a X60 (1706-8DU for free courtesy of her office. So, I've got a nice X41 and a X60 sitting side-by-side at home.

Aside from the obvious performance "improvements" in the X60, are there any good reasons not to go forward with the trade?

She likes the X41 because of the weight difference while she's traveling. She's less enamored by things like bigger hard drives or dual-cores because most of her work is your typical Office stuff and browsing the Web which all fit nicely on the smaller hard drive. Neither of us are gamers. I occasionally fiddle around with basic numerical or statistical analysis (emphasize occasional).

Thanks,
Mitchell
ps: Nope, I won't trade the X60 for your X41... Sorry ;)

Sounds like your Ex has already weighed the value of the trade for her needs, and that you need to do the same for yours. Personally, I'd trade my X41 for an X60s, but would think long and hard before trading it for an X60. Even then, only sharing AC adapters with my T60 would make me consider going with a larger and heavier machine.

X41 performance is nothing to write home about, but it is far from annoying in the type of use you mention, which is also what I use my X41 for. For office work, the X41 remains an absolutely delightful ultralight.

My experience is with the X40 (1.5GHZ Dothan) and the X61, but to me, the only disadvantages of the newer machine are likely to be heat and weight. Neither is a particularly big deal.

On the other hand, the X60 is not only faster but much more upgradeable with respect to memory and disk that the X41, a useful thing if you intend to keep the machine for a while.

The upgradeability of the hard drive would really seal the deal for me. In addition, the Core 2 Duo will give you much more processing power for your trade over the long haul. I say go for it.

Two options;

1) Take X60, sell it, buy X41, keep change :)

2) Take X60, sell it, apply $ toward purchase of X61s :D

Either way, take it!

P.S. I've had an eval X60 from IBM, I do not prefer it over my 1.4GHz Dothan X40. Tough to beat a 2.7 lb. machine.
