Remove Non-English Fonts on New X31

#1 Post by verktyg » Sun Oct 24, 2004 4:11 pm

This may sound like a dumb question but I have a lot of Arabic, Hebrew, Indian, Thai and other non-English fonts on my new X31.

I'm not sure whether they came installed in WinXP or they where installed by MS Office 2000 Pro.

Does anyone know of any problems resulting from uninstalling these fonts?
Chas.

I'm not sure why you'd want to. You won't gain any space and you just decrease the versatility of your computer. There won't be any problems, unless you do something wrong, but there's really no point in removing them.

There are almost 200 fonts installed. While I can read a little Japanese and Cyrillic, I don't read Arabic, Hebrew, Indian or Thai!

I only use a few different fonts. When I go into the Font Drop Down Menus in applications to change a font, it's annoying to have to wade through all of these non-English fonts.

I should have asked "Is there any reason why all of these fonts are installed?"

i.e. Is there some IBM feature or features that require these fonts?

There are many benefits of removing fonts.

1. You get back a tiny bit of control in an OS that seems to be hiding more of its configurations.

2. You get back a tiny bit of disk space.

3. You get back memory. Each font installed takes a little bit of RAM.

4. You get faster startup time. Remember back in the Win3.1 days? Fonts still take a long time to enumerate. Removing unused ones will shorten your wait at startup.

I don't have 200 fonts installed, but on some machines I do have some Asian languages, just so that if I should click a foreign technical web site I won't be asked to install another font.

Does anyone have a list of the file names or font names of all these unneeded fonts? I'd like to delete them, but only if I can do it from a list.
