X30 "no-1802" patch via USB drive?
According to the "http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... twork_card" page, I could make a bootable cd-rom or floppy disk to install the "no-1802" patch for my newly acquired wireless card. The only problem is that I do not have either a USB cd-rom nor a USB floppy drive.
What I have tried to do is:
1. Download the "no-1802 floppy image" from the thinkwiki site
2. Use HP's Drive Key Boot Utility to take the floppy image and make my 128MB Sandisk Cruzer Mini to emulate a floppy bootable image (which looks like it works!).
3. Restart the X30, change in the bios the start-up option to read from the USB stick first.
Now I have the USB stick in the X30, but once the computer boots up I get "Disk Error-Press Any Key to Restart".
I figured it would be easy to just make my USB stick bootable, add the no-1802 patch to the USB stick, restart by changing the bios boot to USB first and then wa-la! ~ install the patch.
Anyone have any luck installing the "no-1802" patch on an X30 w/out a USB cd-rom drive or a USB floppy-drive? And secondly, can a USB stick really be bootable to dos?
Any help would be highly appreciated!

i'm also interested to know about this since i just ordered a x31 off ebay. it doesn't come with an ultrabase nor external cd-rom or floppy. i've also ordered an atheros wireless g card as an upgrade and will need to do this no-1802 hack. if i have no choice i will just buy a usb floppy drive but i'd like to save the money by applying the hack using a usb thumb drive if possible.

Well I found a way as posted here:
http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm
I found out how to do this from some other page but the process is exactly the same (and more info on this person's site).
After creating the USB Boot Key, I just copied the "no-1802" DOS application to the USB stick.
Only problem I have is that the "no-1802" 18KB program I have does not seem to do anything.
I removed the old wireless card and then booted to the USB (after changing the boot options in the BIOS) and got to the prompt C:\.
I typed in "no-1802" but all I get is two "C:", two blank spaces then the prompt C:\ again.
I installed the new wireless card (Intel 2200 B/G), changed the boot options to normal, but the 1802 error still comes up.
I was wondering if anyone knows if due to my USB Memory Key being formatted as a FAT32, does this conflict w/ my hard drive being a NTFS? That is, the "no-1802" program can't change the CMOS whitelist due to the NTFS formatted drive in my X30?
Anyone have luck installing the "no-1802" patch to an X30 w/out use of the cd-rom iso or floppy image, just the pure DOS application?

I had the same problem when my wireless card arrived. unfortunately, after trying for days, I still couldn't get the computer to boot from USB, even after using tools after tools to format the stick.
I finally borrowed an external CD drive from a friend and had the patch applied. But hey if anyone figures out how to make a bootable USB stick with no-1802 i'm interested too!
Before i got the external CD drive i would simply turn on the computer iwthout the card, suspend, stick in the card, boot up, and i'd at least have wireless until the next restart...
Something else i never figured out was how to install the pair of long wire-antennas... i just stuffed it all in the PCMCIA slot! Crap reception but the router's in my room
my few cents :O

I tried to apply the no-1802 patch from an external usb floppy drive but amazingly this still doesn't work w/ my X30!!
I made the bootable floppy from here:
http://www.command-tab.com/2006/02/26/u ... ess-cards/
I ran the program upon boot up (original wifi card uninstalled), in which during the set-up it stated "no valid Fat32 file system on the drive", then prompted me to type in "no-1802". I typed "no-1802" and was returned to the A:\ prompt.
After installing the new wifi card and rebooting, I still receive the 1802 error! Honestly, does anyone know if the "no-1802" will work w/ a NTFS formatted hard drive? Or would I just have better luck trying it w/ an external usb cd drive instead?
Any expert advise would be highly appreciated!

I just finished building an external cd-rom and ripped the no-1802 iso onto a cd and rebooted my x31. the cd took me to A:\ with a message stating to type "no-1802"(without quotes). I typed no-1802 and was returned to A:\. I turned off my laptop and installed my new Atheros b/G/n wireless mini pci card. After turning on my laptop and going into Windows XP without any problems,I was met with an error message stating it detected the AR5005GS PCI card as new hardware. I did a search on the internet for the driver and installed the driver. The card was properly detected and is working fine now in my laptop.
