Does long-time usage harm my x41?

#1 Post by jones » Tue Aug 14, 2007 4:44 am

Hi there,

i just would like to know if it harms my thinkpad x41 when i use it every day as a normal desktop computer. my tp is connected to a normal set of monitor, mouse and keyboard and i barely take it somehwere else. the battery is connected to the tp and the computer is set to a charge threshold of 90% to 94%.

can i now use my tp 10h a day without worrying about any damages of hdd or else?

cheers

The X41 has plenty of horsepower to be used as a desktop machine. Bear in mind that using it for ten hours a day will put more wear and tear on the hard drive than using it on and off for travel. You could always use an external USB hard drive plugged into an X4 dock and boot from that for use as your "desktop" drive.

My X41 has been in use for at least 12 hours a day since I bought it exactly two years ago. Several times I have had it running at 100% CPU load for two weeks non-stop. So far no problems - well, apart from dirt in the TFT, but I doubt the runtime is to blame for that.

Despite being warrantied and tested for hundreds of thousands of hours of continuous operation, HDD do have only a certain amount of life. As long as your TP is vented properly to let it cool down whenever it gets too hot there shouldn't be any problem with any other component even after months of continuous usage. In the past I have had a T42 used as a VNC server at my work running Linux for several months straight without any power cycle. We lost power in the building several times during that but because of the battery that laptop kept on running.

I currently have this on a ThinkPad:

~> uptime
10:18:35 up 30 days, 18:56, 1 user, load average: 0.27, 0.26, 0.19
