Harddrive temps around 55C?

#1 Post by Motohead » Sat Aug 18, 2007 1:23 am

I just installed NHC 2 on my x31, and this evening it reported that the harddrive temp is up around 55C and was staying there. It is currently at the stock voltages, with custom dynamic switching (600mhz internet browzing). 512 ram, and a 4200 rpm 60gb drive that came in the computer.

Why would the temp be so high? Is this really an issue? Also, at the same settings and use, the CPU is around 50-55C. In all of this, the fan has not turned on.

Should I be worried?

Thanks,
Drew

50-55C is a pretty high CPU temperature for an X31. Did you set the CPU voltages on NHC? On my previous 1.6 GHz X31, I used 0.764V as the 6x voltage (this is the one that matters the most), and it really helped the system run cooler -- and the batteries last longer.

No, I haven't messed with the voltages yet, I'm a little nervous about messing with it as I just got the computer and got it set up.

Will lowering the voltage help with the hdd temp?

Generally, yes. It lowers the CPU temp, and that really affects everything inside the X31. Set the 6x temperature to 0.764V, and run the test -- if it's all OK, you should be fine (I know many other people running at either 0.764V or slightly lower on X31s) and it should drop the temperatures significantly at idle or under light usage.

Alright, I'll give it a shot. But still, would IBM have sent out a computer that would burn up it's hdd? Also, what harddrive setting do you run on NHC? Should acoustic management be availible (mine is grayed out)?

Thanks for the help,

Drew

55C won't burn it out.

No, acoustic management choice is not available on the X31.

Then what temperature should I be concerned with? I'd like to change the error message to a higher temp if it is reasonable to do so.

Is there any reason that NHC shows four (4) 14x sections? Should I change them all or just one?
