X41 Notebook memory upgrade

#1 Post by snabjab » Fri Aug 24, 2007 10:14 am

I have a X41 notebook (2528) and I'm looking to upgrade the RAM from 512MB to 1GB. I realize I'll have to replace the single SODIMM with a new module; my question is whether I have to be picky with the new 1GB SODIMM. Newegg has a Corsair value module for about $45 shipped. Seems like a trusted name at the right price. Thoughts?

Many thanks in advance.

If you can, go for the extra 1GB. Makes all the difference on an X41. You should not need to replace the current ram; just add the extra ram in the slot on the underside of the machine. I'm lousy at working on machines, but I even I managed to insert the extra 1GB without any problems.

Interesting. So the max memory for the system is 1.5GB rather than 1GB, and there are actually two rather than one SODIMM slots?

That's great news. I'm not looking forward to replacing it but hopefully I'll pull it off without screwing anything up too badly.

Many thanks for the help with a simple question.

The X41 has two RAM slots. One is either 256MB or 512MB and is soldered onto the motherboard, so it can't be removed. The other one is removable. Find out whether the latter slot in your machine is occupied. If it is, you will need to remove the module before upgrading it.

Your 2528 is the same as my 2525. You should have 512 MB pre-installed, which is internal and unchangeable. Up to another 1GB can be added. Just turn over the machine, undo the only cover on the base, open it and slide in the extra RAM (into the only available slot). It is incredibly straightforward; the only possible problem could be finding a suitable screwdriver.

I would certainly recommend going for the full, extra 1MB. The improvement in performance is noticeable.

Thanks to everyone for your help! The extra gig is going to transform this very slothful machine.

There are a couple of reports that a 2GB SODIMM fits and works in an X41, however only 2GB of the 2.25/2.5GB will actually be usable.
