X41 RAM 1.0GB vs 1.5GB-Will difference be noticeable?

#1 Post by ibmdell » Sat Aug 25, 2007 10:22 pm

Just bought a X41 and have a spare 512mg stick around. Should I get a 1gb stick to get a total of 1.5gb? Will it be noticeable?

Mainly X41 used for web surfing and office apps.

Sir, 512 MB soldered? or 256 MB soldered? with 256 MB x 2 or 512 MB x 1 combination? X41 only has 1 slot available with either 256 MB or 512 MB soldered into the board.

FWIW, 1.5 GB will make your thinkpad happy and you'll feel the difference as well.

For just web surfing and light office work 1GB shouldn't be any slower than 1.5GB. Only if you run multiple or large applications will it make a difference.

Thanks for the replies. Found a 1gb stick on ebay for $35. Will splurge on it.

Except for an extra few seconds when hibernating, there is absolutely no downside to having more RAM in your X41. I have 1.5GB in mine and am actually considering getting a 2GB stick, though I really don't need it.

I absolutely love the X4 form factor.

Sir, I am under the impression you can't go higher than 1.5 GB on X41/t, no?

Published spec is 1.5GB, but that is because 2GB sticks did not yet exist when the X41 was released. There was a thread on this forum about using 2GB sticks in the X41 and getting a full 2.5GB in Windows.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=41061 is the thread. There is something in the BIOS or architecture that gives only 1.99GB (after the GMA 900 takes 128MB for video).

Not sure if this has been resolved yet or if Vista is a fix (can't test yet as I don't own a 2GB module).

Very interesting, thanks for the info. Please report back if you ever try 2GB module under Vista.

I am using X41t with extra 2GB SODIMM. Under VISTA, I can only see 1.99GB as well. It seems no hope of getting full 2.5GB.

You know, my x41 tablet DID seem significantly faster after upgrading the ram to 1.5 GB, but I've since slimmed down the software on my system and disabled the pagefile. According to Task Manager, my ram usage is currently under 600 MB with typical use, so I don't know how much benefit upgrading my ram had. Perhaps, however, it makes it that much safer to run without a paging file.

If you already did then ignore this, but I believe you need to enable PAE (the 3GB switch) to use more than 2GB of ram in windows. Normally it reserves 2GB for system and 2GB for programs (regardless of how much you have) and to have more addressable space for programs (and thus allow it to see all your ram) you have to take away some from system. Thus 1GB reserved for system and 3GB for programs.
