I had been putting off sorting out an X41 TabletPC with a security issue - I had started to configure it some time ago when the logon screen changed and up came a Security message about the chip being disabled...at the time I thought I would do a factory restore and start again but when I ran RnR it told me I needed a password to proceed?
I always have the same password when I build/configure machines as it is a no brainer so I put my usual password in. No joy. Tried with CAPS LOCK ON, scroll lock on, num lock on etc. all to no avail. Tried hitting some adjacent keys in case I made a mistake - unlikely as you are usually prompted twice when inputting a password but worth a try.
I finally managed to get in with the hidden Administrator account and ended up uninstalling CSS 7 as I believe that was what caused the grief in the first place and it seemed to settle down.
I upgraded both Windows & Lenovo software - just what was wrong with Software installer anyway - much better than System Update but no choice as many updates not available through SI any more...
Part of the upgrade was RnR 4 and it took four failed attempts to finally upgrade the existing 3.10 to v4
Having lost peace of mind by now and wishing to revert back to factory I figured I would do a full factory restore so booted into RnR v4.
Big mistake - got about 99% through Predesktop copying files and got the error File X:\Preboot\UTILS\TVT_RES.DLL could not be copied, error 112 = There is not enough space on the disk
WTF? Plenty of room on C: - maybe the hidden partition was full but isn't the full factory restore supposed to format/delete and start over?
Of course I couldn't get back into Windows - just RnR 4 at every boot time...
Hitachi DFT? Sees Hitachi drive, exercises, runs tests and reports but cannot erase data as it does not support this particular model so still unable to recover...
Anyway to cut a long story short the only way round was for me to plug in an older USB drive that had RnR 3 installed to restore from and that copied the files without running out of space no problem. Very lucky to have that lying around as I had started to update all 15 Tablets in the field and that included RnR 3->RnR 4
Have I missed something fundamental here?
What is it with Lenovo?
CSS never caused me grief before.
The new Software Update does not have the features of the older Software Installer?
RnR 4 fails just when you need it most and I was lucky enough to have RnR 3 on hand?
The only saving grace I see with RnR 4 is the option to do a factory restore - I do not get the option in RnR3 but at least it works...
Anyone else had these problems?
