How to Install a OS on the 2nd HDD at Ultrabase?

#1 Post by hutty2000 » Tue Aug 28, 2007 12:40 am

Hi, everyone. I got a new Hitachi 100G 7200 rpm Hard Drive for my X4 Dock. But I do not know how to How to Install a OS on the 2nd HDD at Ultrabase?
The following is message from Dorin, how ever I still can not figure it out?
hutty2000, i did it using acronis. first time it was pretty easy i just had to change the boot.ini ( change rdisk0 to rdisk1), if it doesnt work (it worked first time for me, but later, i think an windows update or so, it didnt anymore) so i had to reinstall the whole windows...using windows fresh install guidelines from this site

so first try acronis, then boot normally into hdd0 (x40's hdd) change the boot.ini from hdd1 and cross your fingers...if not the painfull long process of reinstalling windows and reconfigure it....
if you still have the hiden partition from ibm you;re all set!

any questions fire away!
Is there anybody tried this and can explain it more specifically for me? Thanks a lot.

It really depends on what you want to do and have available in terms of hardware and software...

What he is referring to is Acronis True Image Software. You can use it to copy an image of your hard disk to the other drive - it will look exactly like your primary drive.

If you want a clean install you could make a set of recovery disks (if you haven't already done so), them temporarily replace your main hard disk drive with the new one, put the recovery disk 1 in the CD/DVD drive and run a a recovery.

If you want to put Linux on you could download and burn a live CD for Ubuntu or your favorite flavor Linux, boot from the live CD, and then tell it where to install the OS.

There are many options. If you need more help please be specific as to what exactly you are trying to do, usign what hardware and software.

Hi Gibbs,
Thank you for the reply.
Acutally, I just want to put a system into the HDD1 and ran the system on it. I think both method you mentioned will fit my purpose. I will try one of them may be tommorrow.

Another thing I want to ask: Could I take out the primary hard drive (HDD0), put it in to a hard drive case, copy all files on HDD0 into another computer, paste the copied files to the hard drive in the Ultrabase (HDD1). And then boot from HDD1.

Will this work ? (Just my own idea, because this is the most easiest way for me to do)

Performance Test of 100GB 7200 rpm HDD

#4 Post by hutty2000 » Wed Aug 29, 2007 3:59 am

Hi, I just tested the performance of the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD compared with the HDD in my X40.

1. From pressing the power to hear the windows booting music, it took 78 seconds for the 1.8 HDD and took 58 seconds for the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD in the X4 dock.

2. From pressing the power to fully loaded every software (I have a lot of software fully installed), it took 5 minutes 15 seconds for the 1.8 HDD and took 2 minutes 40 seconds for the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD in the X4 dock.

So the performance difference is huge.

I think the reason why the time difference was small before hearing the windows sound is that the speed of CPU could be a bottle neck, so the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD did not run at full speed.
