X41 TabletPC now won't boot??

#1 Post by GlynH » Sun Sep 02, 2007 5:44 pm

Hi there,

The X41 TabletPC that I configured & used last week now won't boot.

I get the User Logon screen, choose the only Limited User account that we used last week & enter the password.

The PC then shows 'Loading your personal settings' then just sits there, little or no HDD activitity... :(

Thinking that particular User profile may have become corrupt I tried the other User with Admin rights - same problem.

I even tried the 'hidden' Administrator account with the same result.

I can login if I boot into Safe mode but that really is not the point - while in Safe Mode I copied the Users Outlook.pst file to a USB Memory stick (using a DOS box - brings back memories) so if all else fails we can salvage his work from last week and restore to the backup taken Friday morning when all seemed OK...

Can some kind soul please give me some help/advice/tips on how to determine just what is going on here?

I had planned to take the PC to the office in the morning to finish the User training but that is pointless if the PC won't boot!

Thanks in advance.
Regards,

Glyn:

Can you take a look at the Event Viewer while running in safe mode? (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer). Look in the System log for red X errors; there might be some clues in there.

Note * When I started my X41T in safe mode to check this, the trackpoint was not working but the pen did work. I'm not sure if this was a fluke or not, but if it happens to you just pick up the pen to navigate.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I left the TabletPC 'booting' and went to bed last night.

When I got up this morning I had the desktop back as normal.

I worked it a bit, logged off/on, changed user, turned it off and back on again.

Seems fine now (apart from the usual slooow booting - saw your guide...seems like you have put a lot of work into getting your TabletPC to boot quicker!)

I will take a look at the Event viewer next time I log on.

I hate faults like this that 'clear' themselves up for no apparent reason as you never know what it was or if it will come back again.

Thanks again for your reply Mark.
