Is Hitachi 7K100 still leader for X31 drives?

#1 Post by John Henry » Mon Sep 03, 2007 10:55 am

First off, I wanted to think the mods and members of this excellent forum. I've used it many times over the past few years, but this is my first post.

I've had my X31 for a few years and absolutely love it. But now I want to upgrade the HD for a speed boost and more storage. Most of the threads I've read, such as this one show the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 as one of the best in terms of reliability, speed and noise.

So:
Have any better drives come out in the past year?
Are 7K100 owners still happy with their drives?

Many Thanks!
John

Welcome to the club.

The X31 can only use PATA drives and not SATA ones. The biggest PATA drive that I've seen is 250GB 5400rpm, which came out just a few weeks ago. It's slightly slower than the 100GB 7200rpm drive, but offers 2.5 times as much storage space. So, if storage is important for you, this might be even better than the 100GB 7200rpm drives.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Thank you PianoWizard.

I think I'd rather go with the proven track record of the 7K100. 250GB is very impressive, but reliability is my first priority.

I upgraded my X31 to a 80 Gb 7K100 2 months ago (~$80 from newegg) and I'm happy.

I can't say that I notice the speed difference that much when compared to my 5400 rpm. But it is quieter and definitely faster but it's hard to notice these things unless you do side by side tests or use quantitative measures which I did not do.

Anyway, am very happy and would recommend the upgrade.

Thanks CWF.

Just a quick update. Everything went very well with the cloning and installation. Acronis made a perfect copy of my old drive, including the hidden partition.

My startup time went from 1:02 down to 42 seconds, and programs now open super fast. I couldn't be happier!

(The new drive does however get quite warm, but that's probably due to all of the HD-intense stuff I did last night updating and installing SW.)

So, is the Hitachi 7k100 the fastest PATA drive?

Thanks :)

Yes, but the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 series is worth consideration as well ... 5 year manufacturers warranty and only slightly slower than Hitachi 7K100 series.

Seagate and Hitachi drives at Newegg.

E7K60 is designed for continuous operation to support 24x7 applications. The 'E' signifies enhanced availability and is for critical applications. As far as the exact difference in specifications I'd direct you to the product documentation for research.
