X4 Dock vs. External Combo

#1 Post by aboveliquidice » Tue Sep 04, 2007 8:02 am

Hey guys - this is my first thread - so If I accidently tread on some toes - feel free to let me know.

I just purchased an X41 Tablet off of Ebay - and I know that I will be needing a disc drive.

Does everyone recommend getting an X4, then locking on a modular slim dvd drive? Doing so puts me in the 70 - 75 dollar range, not including shipping. Or I could simply purchase a USB ext combo drive off of Ebay for 65 shipped.

Is there any particular advantage to having the Dock??? I am open to any and all suggestions.

Well, you get all the extra ports of the dock, of course. If you move around a lot, it is nice not having to insert all those plugs and cables whenever you return. I think the dock has its own power adapter, too, but better check that first.

Some firmware upgrades can only be done by booting from an ultrabay drive in the dock, not from a USB drive. There might be workarounds for that, though.

Hey - I appreciate the reply... The only thing that bothers me is the inability to watch DVDs on the road... hahah - pretty silly... Being able to load firmware stuff is pretty important though, especially considering the clicking HD issue -

I will definitely investigate the workaround people have made to use the EXT dvd able to load firmware...

Thanks for the insight
