Hard drive for *new* x20

#1 Post by edvan22 » Mon Nov 01, 2004 8:53 pm

Hello,

I just became a thinkpad owner after getting a used and in need of repair X20. I have a CDRW drive on order and need to replace the Hard drive. The 10GB Travelstar in the unit has failed and someone gave me a 4GB model (little small) but that has some bearing noise to it. Can anyone reccomend a good reliable model (around 10GB) that I can pick up new for around $60? Is any notebook drive compatable or are there only certain options?

Thanks!

Ed

Ed,

I recently replaced the original 20GB with a 40GB on my X20. No troubles except I found I needed more space.

Let me know if you're interested in a 20GB.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually interested in picking up a new drive because of the bearing noise. What brand did you get? Are there any specific specs I need to look for the make sure it will work. I found a fitjitsu new that I would like to pick up.

Thanks!

Edvan22,

Fujitsu drives are generally quiet and come with good warranty and tech support. In fact, I have brought several Fujitsu drives (for notebooks and desktops) and never had one fail on me. I have a hitachi 40 GB 5400 rpm drive that came in my x31 and it is also quiet; can barely notice that the drive is in the machine. I also brought a Fujitsu to put into an external USB 2.0 case from Newegg and have been happy with it. Again, it runs very quiet even when moving large amounts of data back and forth between the internal and external drive.

Check out the drives here at newegg:

My guess is that most of the 4200 rpm or 5400 rpm 9.5 mm, 2.5 inch drives listed there should work in your x20 without any hassles. At the most you might need to update the BIOS on your computer to the latest version to use drives larger than 40GB.

Instructions on adding/removing drives from the X20 can be found at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4Q2KW6

Hello,

The 20GB drive is in perfect condition, no lube job or replacement of ball bearings required. It's a Travelstar 20GB DJSA-220 4200RPM, P/N 07N4382, FRU 22L0072. I also have the original 24X CD-ROM that fits into the Ultrabay 2000, P/N 08K9576, FRU 08K9579, also in perfect condition.

I replaced the HDD with a Toshiba 40GB MK4019GAX 5400RPM, P/N 08K9788. I notice it's slightly quieter when in a completely silent room in the dead of the night. And the CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM.

If still interested in the 20GB or the CD-ROM post here, send me a private message or email me via my home page below.
