What's left to upgrade on my X31?

#1 Post by cwf » Wed Sep 19, 2007 7:41 pm

Hello friends.

So I go at X31 a few months ago...the specs when I got it:

P4 1.7
2 GB RAM
80 GB 5400 RPM HD
Intel 802.11b wireless

It was a beauty when I got it but I'm always looking to spend my money and upgrade :). So I followed your advice and got:

80 GB 7k100
Atheros b/g wireles

So what's next...am I all maxed out? I guess there's bluetooth that I don't have...but I won't use that. Is there anything else I can spend my money on to make my baby better!?

Siva

The only other items I can think of are FireWire and an extended life battery, but that's a pretty nice specimen as it stands now.

Upgrade the XGA screen to SXGA+, i.e. the one used in the X6* tablet. It's not straightforward though.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Do you know if someone has done it? (upgrading the screen, I mean)

PS

2 add ons (more than upgrades) I can think of are :

1) e-SATA
2) SCSI

both thru pcmcia...

An upgrade, instead, would be changing the Atheros with an a/b/g , but the one you have is quite good
X31 2672-C6J
IBM 9401-P03 (As/400 "portable")
A crowd of assembled desktops, a jungle of cables... and a Palm m515

Hey;

Get a 7200 RPM disk drive, you will notice a huge improvement. My X31 with 2GB ram and a 7200 rpm drive kicks a**!
T43 1.8 / 2GB / 60GB 7K100 X31 1.4GHz / 2GB / 60GB 7K100

Thanks for the feedback. The SXGA+ upgrade sounds out of my leauge.

Thinking about it, one of the things I'd like improved is graphics performance. First, quality of the display on my 20" LCD (I'm pretty sure the analog VGA is the culprit). Second, better performance in Warcraft 3.

I guess my only option is to go the route of a Dock I or Dock II and get a external PCI video card. I'm going to start looking into this upgrade but from initial survey it looks like I'd be able to get a used Dock II for $60 or less. However, I see challenge in finding a used PCI video card...will start looking into that!

Yay...a new project!

Many of Matrox's older cards (G200, G400) came in PCI and featured awesome VGA output. They're very cheap these days.

The PCI slot allows you to use a card with DVI, but these can be a bit pricier.

But it has built-in CF slot! I was checking out the compact flash GPS for a little while...sounds interesting. =)

Yes but you get MUCH quicker speeds with that adapter.

Do you have more Infos about that upgrade? I'd really love to have a "bit" more resolution on the x31.
