These sorts of problems are most commonly caused by signalling problems from a broken wire somewhere, usually;

a/ in the flex cable between the motherboard and the LCD panel; or
b/ the signal wires in the LCD itself.

First step to diagnose for me, would be to try a known good LCD flex cable (if you have one around) and see if that makes a difference. (Or if it's easier to temporarily remove the LCD panel, try a known-good LCD panel.. this can sometimes be easier as the flex cable routing can get hairy for some laptop models)

Is this a screenshot?

If it's a screenshot then the hardware is all correct and it's some kind of a software/driver problem.

As far as part numbers and the like go, you are best to consult the hardware maintenance manual (HMM) for the X31. This is easily available in PDF form from the Lenovo support web site (I think www.thinkwiki.org links directly to them, as well, as part of their model specification pages.)

As well as the parts list (FRUs -- field replacable units), it also has detailed, illustrated instructions on how to pull everything part, and put them back together :)

Pricing of the cables (and/or LCD modules, as need be) is widely variable, depending on where you are, and where you look (IBM/Lenovo direct, Google search, eBay, independent service centres, other folk on thinkpads.com, etc.)
