The first question that leaps to mind in attempting to answer your questions is, why do you want to format the HD?

I want to install my own copy of XP. and just incase i need to do it in the future. I want to know how to format because i want to partittion my drive.

I have an x22 and used an iomega brand external cd-r drive connected to the USB port. You can select to boot from a USB cd drive by pressing f8 (i believe) while booting. It's nice that you have an extra dvd drive but a USB2 enclosure for that drive might cost just as much as just buying the entire external drive. i found mine at office depot for $60 on sale. i think most brands of external drives work fine.

Since the X40 has usb2, installing xp should be pretty quick. don;t forget to delete the hidden partition if you want more room. TIP- consider partitioning your drive into C and D . Use Norton Ghost to create an image of the c partition and save the image of the c partition onto the D partition. The next time you need to reinstall windows you can just restore from that image onto the C drive. it'll save you a lot of time. i actually keep 3 drive images on the D partition- a clean install of XP, a basic install of XP (IBM's drivers, my preferences for windows), and a full install of all my programs. i can go back to any of these depending upon what i want to do. i only used my external cd drive once and that was to install xp for the first time. since then i have no need the drive i just use ghost. BTW, once windows xp is up and running you can share the cd drive of a networked desktop and use it as a drive to install your apps.

Hi, thanks by the way.

I have some question on the Norton Ghost. i have never use it before. so i was wondering how does it work? will it back up everything of my windows inculde all it drives and apps? or just the files in my c drive? Thanks.

Norton ghost can back up an entire hard drive or just a partition. it saves the image in a single file with the extension .gho. you can also back up to cd's or dvd's but that takes more time.

it backs up EVERYTHING. when you restore from a ghost image you go back to how your computer was EXACTLY on the day you made the image. i recommend keeping data (word docs, pics, music, etc on your D partition). making backup images of the c drive is faster if you only have to backup windows and your programs. besides if you ever have a complete corruption of the c drive your data will still be safe.

One feature the X40 shares with the X31 is its ability to BOOT from almost anything connected to the USB port.

Use a memory key, floppy drive, etc. to BOOT, FORMAT and partition your HD to your taste.

Keep in mind that your X40 comes with all the drivers and a number of IBM applications. The only one that I find a waste of time is Update Connector; the rest all have some value. One of the biggest (Access Connections) is also one of the best. And there are those that like Update Connector even though I don't care for it.

You can also use Partition Magic 8 and carve back some of the space for a separate partition.

Do as you wish, of course, but the IBM preload is much better than most, and all of it can be hidden or otherwise made transparent.

EDIT: DFT only works on IBM drives, use Eraser instead, it works on all.

After deciding on your plan of attack (and come back), use Drive fitness Test (DFT) to write absolute zeros while formatting the HDD to completely erase it.
