Is it safe to use a 2.5 HD in a 3.5 external enclosure ?

#1 Post by visitor » Sat Oct 27, 2007 4:36 pm

My X31 has stopped working and I need to access files from its HD.
I don't have a 2.5 external case at hand but I do have a few ones for 3.5 HDs and CD drives, and an IDE adaptor for the 2.5 to 3.5 factor.
Has anyone done this without problems?
I wonder if the enclosure's power would feed voltage in excess or other side-effect, since a 2.5 case is usually USB-powered.
Thanks for reading, appreciate any help.

Since you have the adapter I doubt there would be a problem. After all if you use the adapter in a regular PC it is taking the same voltages that the enclosure would supply and dropping them down to what the 2.5" drive needs.

Actually the 3.5" enclosure (or power plug in a desktop) is providing 12 V and 5 V. The adapter only draws power from the 5 V. It'll work all right, provided you plug the adapter in correctly. (Many will fit the drive both ways, which would send 5 V down data lines, which is a Bad Thing.)

Thanks everyone, I feel more encouraged.

And yes, the adapter originally allowed both sides. When I figured that I stuck and broke a needle inside the wrong slot so the thing was "keyed".
