Problems with X41t hard drive

#1 Post by kcirbmab » Sat Oct 27, 2007 6:56 pm

I recently bought an x41t, used, from a local seller. He told me before I bought it that it had a history of needing to replace the hard drive often. Well, about two weeks after purchasing the hard drive died yet again.
Basically it's giving me an unmountable boot disc error and I can no longer reinstall xp (or any other OS for that matter).

Since the system is still under warranty, I can have the hard drive replaced, but I'm worried if this will just keep happening over and over and over.

Anyways, here's my question: Is this common for the x41? To have 3 hard drives fail makes it seem like it's this particular system's fault or that the hard drives are just really bad quality.

And also, are there any alternative hard drives to the default one now? Is there something I can do to prevent future hard drives from being damaged?

Tell Lenovo maintenance that you want the system board replaced because the machine eats hard drives. Hopefully they have a record of the previous maintenance on it.

No, infact I'm hearing this for the 1st time. Howerver, no machine is immune to error free computing.

Since most of the information you stated is coming from what the seller told you about the machine, you might perhaps try some resolution to fix this issue before sending it out to warranty services:

Unmountable Boot Volume.

Thanks for the replies, I'll see what I can do about getting the board replaced.

As for ryengineer, I tried this to fix the boot problem. I was able to load windows, but almost anything I did (ie - run ANY program) would give me an error message saying the OS did not have permission.

Since I had no important information on the laptop yet, I just decided to reformat but upon formatting the hard drive with XP, it would stay at 0% and never get anywhere. I tried installing Ubuntu as well, just in case, and it gave me an error saying there was something wrong with the hard drive or boot disc.

I already reformatted XP once without problems, but for this second time, nothing is working.

Yeah, if the machine is chewing HD's I would say something is not right. Other than the loud clunks and SLOWWW response I never had problems with the HD on my X41T.

You can get a history of the service calls, they might determine it is a LEMON and get you another machine...
