X20 - boots only without battery, problems

#1 Post by zaqrack » Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:21 pm

Hi!

I have the following issues (which showed up after a plane flight, could the scanner at the airport be the reason for this?)

-booting with battery only never works.
-booting with battery AND AC only works sometimes. If it boots, thinklight, num lock, caps lock, battery and suspend leds are lighting.
-booting without battery, ONLY AC is always OK. When hotswapping the battery later, and it runs from battery OK, without battery status of course.
-no sound at all
-recognises USB devices but some have issues when AC power is connected.

I tried removing the battery and CMOS batt., pressing power button a couple of times, but no imporvements.
I suppose its the motherboard. Do i need to replace it, or is it perhaps a fixable part broken?

If its the MB, I'm looking for an X20/X21 battery with shipping to Hungary :)

Thank you for your answers.
Peter

You might consider opening up your thinkpad, cleaning things up putting it back and booting up with a new IBM battery.

You'll need to consult HMM though:

Hardware Maintenance Manual- ThinkPad X20
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

I had the same symptoms with a ThinkPad 600E I had just bought it used from a local used computer store. Turned out the charging circuit was bad. They tried a different battery and it ruined it. Fortunately they had another 600E they swapped it out for.

Looks like your motherboard is bad.

thanks for the replies. So it might be the battery or the charging circuit gone bad. The sound being fixed from a cleaning also supports this statement :)

I'm trying now to measure battery charging time, looks like its charging correctly. No battery info is available though, it says unknown amount remaining.
I would like to make sure its the battery or the charging circuit before I'm going to buy anything. Unfortunately I have no possiblity to try it with another battery, but I'm trying to find one. :(
