intel ulv 1.1 vs intel lv 1.4

#1 Post by beefjerky » Thu Nov 11, 2004 3:20 pm

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an x40 but not sure which cpu to choose from. I'll mostly use this for dev work and web surfing. I'll also beef up the ram to 1G.

Does anyone here know anything about the following:
1. What's the performance difference between Intel's 1.1 ulv and 1.4 lv?
2. How much more battery life can I get if I choose the 1.1 ulv as compared to the 1.4 lv?
3. Is the 1.1 ulv comparable/faster than a pentium 4 1.0 in terms of speed?
4. Has anyone here installed w2k3 server on the x40?

Hope to hear from you guys!

Thanks,
beefjerky

1. The 1.4 has twice as much cache memory. So, if you are CPU bound (which compiling often is), and your dataset fits in the smaller 1MB cache, you should see about 27% improvement (1.4/1.1). If the data set is larger than the 2MB cache, so it won't fit in either, then your memory may be the new bottleneck and you would see NO improvement, because both machines run the memory at PC2700 speed.

If the data set fits in the 1.4 but not the 1.1, then the 1.4 will be a LOT faster.

All that said, I'd guess you'll see about a 20% improvement.

2. If your machine is mostly idling, I would expect no longer run time. If it's full tilt all the time... IBM says you get 15 minutes shorter with the small battery on the faster machine, 30 minutes with the big battery, or about 7.5%.

3. The 1.1 ULV is a Pentium M and much faster than a P4 at the same clock speed.

I can't speak to item 4.

Thanks for the quick response!

The 1.1 ulv (Intel 733) also has a 2 mb cache. I guess it's just a matter of price now. If the battery life beteewn the two is negligible, I think I'm just going to go with the 1.4.

Thx!
