X30 WiFi upgrade

#1 Post by miketoro » Wed Nov 21, 2007 8:37 pm

I have built-in Intel B wireless on my 2672-4BU X30 and want to upgrade to an A/B/G ... is this possible? The Lenovo Website doesn't have options for model -- the options start at 2673s.

Thanks in advance :!: I'm loving this forum. I can't let my favorite computer die so I'm switching out the drive, maxing out the memory and I figure while I'm at it, if I can get G capable, I might as well ...

Here you go. Tell Gena Harryc sent you -
IBM/Lenovo 802.11b/g Mini PCI Adapter

Note - If you purchase this card, make sure your X30 is at BIOS 1.09 prior to installing it.

Hey there.
I just put in a Intel ABG card in my X30.
Read about it here....http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=52519

I have tryed to install the IBM intel 2915 ABG card and could not get it to wotk.
I then traded the IBM card for a Toshiba Intel 2915 ABG card and after the no-1802 hack , it works great.

The miniPCI slot must be under the keyboard, right? I've opened up the slot on the underside, by the battery, and it's just memory ... :?:

Yep , it's under the keyboard on the left side.
Theres 4 small "marked" screws on the bottom for the keyboard.

Thanks, dude. I can see them, all marked with a little keyboard graphic  With hard drive, more memory, G WiFi, maybe even a USB 2.0 card ... this is going to be like a new computer :!: Thanks again for all the help. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Be aware that some x30 models have a combined modem/wifi minipci card. If you have one of these there is no official wifi upgrade path which doesn't involve loosing the faxmodem, "finch" claimed in this thread that the X30 will work with an X31 bluetooth/modem communications daughter card.

I just saw this on slickdeals - they are some pretty hot deals at CompUSA online for FAR wireless PCMCIA cards... I know this isn't the fix you all are talking about (or even interested in) - but it would work if needed:

Thanks for the heads-up old timer. I'm not too concerned about losing the modem though it's good to know. (I won't go nuts on that off chance I needed it and couldn't figure out why it stopped working.)

drivers won't install

#11 Post by miketoro » Tue May 20, 2008 7:00 pm

Six months later, I got around to installing the card today. I bought the item from Gena that Harry posted ...

I've tried the IBM/Lenovo drivers, a third party driver mentioned on the ThinkWiki and Atheros drivers -- nothing works. Everything but the Atheros lock-up the system, but those still give me an error and crash when I try to update via the Web.

Any ideas?

I forget which part number Gina was selling, but most likely you need to install the X31 Atheros drivers.

Same problem. Driver installs, then Windows logo error message saying this driver hasn't been tested for XP pops up, I click continue, system locks up. Computer can't even start up afterwards sans safe mode where I have to uninstall the driver to get things working again.

I pulled the card: Ambit T60H786 FRU: 93P3475.

I found some Acer drivers that seemed to match. They installed without freeze, but still didn't work i.e. I'm plagued with the device manager :!: sign.

I ran Windows Update, installed SP3, and eventually a newer driver was found. At least the system isn't freezing and crashing all over itself, but the exclamation mark of death :!: isn't budging.

I'm starting to think this card won't work in an x30. Indeed, IBM claims the Atheros B/G only goes back to x31. I asked Gena about this when I bought the card and she assured me it'd work. You win some and lose some, I guess ...

Any other ideas before I try to return it?

I just installed an Atheros B/G Card in an X30 and it worked fine with the latest BIOS. The part # was 93P3475, If that's the card you got from Gina it is bad.

Did you use the x31 drivers posted above?
