X41 Tablet - possible to restore using donor machine?

#1 Post by michaelm » Fri Nov 23, 2007 1:46 pm

Hi all,

Great forum and as someone who has just purchased 3 X41's (ex corporate machines and intend to use one myself plus one each for the kids this Christmas) very interested in the comments.

The working X41's have proved to be a great machine but I have one with a Windows Xp problem. This happened after I used the IBM system update and let it do its thing to update various bits and pieces (should have left alone perhaps!). Anyway, the thing boots up, gets to Windows XP then obviously has a problem and shows the blue screen with 'memory dump' messages etc., and restarts.

Any ideas as to how to fix this - tried safe mode and get in OK but what on earth do you do next to find the fault?

Another option - as I have one other working machine with a fresh install plus the apps I want the kids to have access to can I use the backup to create an image of this on a USB drive then transfer this to the machine with the problem? Would this work? Ideal if it can.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Seems like you need to reinstall XP. Did your machines come with recovery partitions? If not you need to obtain original IBM recovery CDs. If one of your machines is still in warranty Lenovo will send you some. If none is they might anyway.

Have a look at this thread. If you have I386 folders on your HDDs seriously consider creating install disks without the IBM junk.

As a last resort you can reinstall XP from any source as long as you keep the product activation file. (Was it c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl? Try google.)

Many thanks for the advice - have reinstalled XP using the partition on the HD.

Bit of a pain but all well now - just the hassle of a few hours of getting the machine back to as it was.

Many thanks

I just reloaded my x41 tablet from scratch - It was about a 5 hour ordeal once you included all drivers, apps - and os tweaks to get the tablet working just the way you want it.

Glad your machine is up and running.
