x40 US power supply and x4 ultrabase weight

#1 Post by x432 » Wed Nov 28, 2007 11:58 am

hi,

still a newb to the x series of laptops but after reading alot of reviews, i had to get one for myself, stumbled on this website (which is tops) during my searches and its been a wealth of information with my decision on which x series to get.

i've decided to go with the x40 as it is the smallest out of the lot, but couldnt decide at first from the x2 & x3s.

i just have 3 lil questions at this stage.

1. how much does the x4 ultrabase weigh?

2. i live in australia, and was wondering with the powersupply can that be used here, we run 240v and i think it can. could someone confirm?

3. i have a t30 power supply from my last laptop and was wondering if i could use the wall socket cable that connects to the power block instead of having to crimp the US plug.

any help appreciated and thanks in advance

cheers

1.) 1.43 lbs

2.) Worldwide A/C compatibility

3.) Assuming that you are talking about cutting off the ground pin on the power cord, just get a grounded outlet and don't hook up the ground. That way the ground pin has somewhere to go. No sense in ruining a perfectly good cord.

just wondering has anyone here purchased a laptop from thinkpadworld off ebay?

this is the one that im looking at

its a 1.4Ghz, 512 ram, & 40GB HDD and looks to be a refurb but comes with 3 years warranty which i think is good. (the seller hasnt confirmed yet if the 3 year warranty is serviceable here in Aus)

ebay link

is this over priced? i know that their shipping prices are though, but i havent been able to find a close to new one with long warranty

found the answer for my question with regards to thinkpadworld

The price is a bit high but not too much so. The problem is the warranty - "Includes 6 months IBM EasyServe Warranty plus a 3 Year Mack International extended warranty". From what I've heard about 'Mack' warranties, if you bought this machine just look at it like it has 6 months warranty from IBM because the Mack warranty is worthless. If you google 'problem mack laptop warranty' I think you'll get the idea.
If you dig deep enough, threads like these surface -

That link is showing a 1.2GHz machine.

I'd go for either a 1.0GHz ULV cpu machine, to extract the longest battery life OR a 1.4GHz or above LV cpu machine so you get the Dothan cpu! Slight performance bump and power savings over non-Dothan LV cpu's.

Also, some models had 256MB and some had 512MB soldered on the motherboard - try to grab a 512MB-based unit, there is only one slot for more memory!

FYI, X41's are slighly heavier with shorter battery life - but they are slightly faster, too.

Good luck, I love my X40's!

thanks harryc and underclocker.

yeah definately wont be buying from thinkpadworld as i've noticed on the mackcam.com website that "Please include a check for return shipping. (Shipping prices are for Continental United States, please call for shipping costs outside the US.)"

whilst i got this from them:

which leads me to think that the mackcam warranty is not serviceable here, as i cant seem to find any mackcam/mack cam service centres here in australia.

the x40 i'd be getting has to fit within budget, so i dont mind any of the models available, not really into performance as i'd like it just for its portability.

is it an easy procedure to install W2K pro, as XP imo is too... automatic (couldnt find anything relevant in the windows forum)

well purchased my x40, should be on its way from the US hopefully today

its a 1.4GHz LV machine with an 8 cell battery and 512 mb of RAM, doesnt have any warranty but the seller reckons its a beautiful machine in excellent condition.

I cant wait till it gets here, it didnt come with any sort of dock just the unit and charger itself.

just have a query with the USB problems and overheating problems that the X series tend to get, and was wondering do the slower x40s (the 1.0ghz ULV and 1.2ghz machines) do they also experience these same issues as well.

thanks

Congrats on the machine, you'll love it.

I think you must be referring to the X24 and X30 machines with regard to heat. I have a 1.4GHz and a 1.2Ghz X40 and neither get hot. I don't recall reading about any reliability issues in paticular with X40's.

X4 bases regularly sell for $25 on eBay - some even have drives in them. You can use any USB optical drive with the unit, though, even as a boot device.

All power used by a CPU is turned into heat. Less power = less heat.

yeah just thought the heat (if any) can contribute to the usb problems that i've been reading but i think its more prevalent when theres a power surge or connecting usb powered devices.

does any body use a western digital passport external hdd? cos i have one on the way down but dont want to fry my usb ports by using it.

its an 80gb one and apparantly shouldnt need to much power as a 120gb

can someone tell me which usb port is powered and which one isnt.

thanks

A hard drive's power use is pretty much independent of its capacity; an 80gb drive will almost always pull just as much power as its 120gb counterpart. It's disk speed (RPM) and simple mechanical design that makes the difference.

got the x40 and its a very nice looking machine, apart from 1 scratch on the lid its in pretty good nick.

the wd passport 80gb portable hdd i got works fine

running the machine isnt too bad although it does lag when copying files and trying to change songs through winamp, but i guess i might need an extra 1gb or RAM

will be installing ubuntu to play around with linux and after kicking the computer out of the room i cant believe how much extra space i have, for those that are space conscious, this is THE machine to get

I bought an x40 with an ultrabase 2+ years ago. i never used the ultrabase and don't see much point to it. I just use usb peripherals (hd, dvd) instead.
