Fixing X31 Motherboards

#1 Post by BobA » Wed Dec 05, 2007 6:00 pm

Does anyone on the forum do this? Is that something easy to do or should I try to find someone to do it for me?

I have several X31 motherboard problems:
A: One that won't power on. It was new last year and worked then .. I don't know what happened (maybe storing it in cold weather).
B: One powers on, but no screen - yes the LCD is good.
C: One that gets a "Thermal sensing error" - yes, I have the lastest BIOS

Thanks.

Not a lot of experience in this area, but some common-sense questions:
A: there's the issue w/ capacitors needing to be emptied, which has happened with several X31's around here. Remove battery, disconnect from AC, and hold down power button on lappy for several seconds. Do this a few times. Theoretically empties capacitors, allows the mobo to fire up again. it's worked for me ...
B: check the ribbon cable from screen to mobo -- the connector can be tricky and/or loose fitting, or the ribbon might be damaged (pretty delicate).
C: hmmnn ... no idea on that one, but it sounds like a heat-related issue, or comms w/ a heat sensor.

Thanks, Jon - good options.

I've sent the boards off for analysis so can't try what you suggested. I had not tried draining the capacitors but had made sure the video ribbon connection was good. Changed that several times with no joy.

Repairing X31 MB's

#4 Post by rckrchrdsn » Sun Dec 30, 2007 10:38 pm

I would be very interested in the outcome here, BobA. I have two X31 with some problems. I just don't know if it is worth the effort. I can get a used MB on eBay from time to time for only $160, sometimes a bit less. BUT I hate trashing them.

Can you give us all a run down when you are done?
Main X31 Vista Ult 1.6Mhz CPU 2Gb RAM 160Gb HD Artheros 54Mbit Wifi,
3-X31s XP, X24 XP, X22 XP, X21 XP, lots of parts for all of them.

Earlier, I reported 3 motherboard problems ..

A: Motherboard wouldn't power on
B: Powered on but no video and no beeping (2 boards)
C: Thermal resistor error.

I sent them to Jamiphar who repaired all but "A" above. I highly recommend anyone talk with him if they have motherboard problems.
