Interchangeability of X31 type 2672, 2673, 2884, 2885, etc.

#1 Post by biggerlongerfaster » Tue Dec 18, 2007 12:00 pm

The X31 is my favorite laptop, and I currently have two 2672's (1.4 GHz). I would like to buy more (as backups) since they're cheap and I'll have many uses for the forseeable future.

My question is, if I bought a 2673 or 2884 or 2885, will I be able to take the hard drive out of my 2672 and more or less run it on one of the other versions (with some minor modifications). The only difference I can detect between the two laptops I have now is that one has 802.11b and one doesn't. So, it's an easy fix and the hard drives are interchangeable.

What if they have different processor speeds. Will this process work? Can I interchange hard drives between a 1.4 GHz and a 1.5 GHz?

My concern is about more serious issues such as not being able to boot into Windows XP or having performance penalties. Things like minor driver changes aren't a concern.

Thanks

Yes you can, the only issues you will run into are the minor driver concerns. In fact, if you install the drivers for both sets of hardware, you probably won't have to worry about that either.

swapping parts

I do this on occassion. I have found with XP and Vista if you just rerun the Lenovo Updater 3.0 that the right drivers get swapped out. I haven't run into any boot issues.

One other thing, I would make sure you update your BIOS and Embed contoller software to the last version. I do this for all my machines that I buy. (I buy a lot for the neices and nephews for college and such.)

3-X31s XP, X24 XP, X22 XP, X21 XP, lots of parts for all of them.

Sorry for the off topic question, but which of the older (and therefore cheaper) x series are the smallest? Is there a noticeable difference from x30, x31 and so on?

X30, 31 and 32 are all exactly the same size.
X30 has slow USB and gimpy firewire.
X31 is much better.
Great machines.
Haven't owned an X32.
