high cpu usage when using ethernet

#1 Post by fantomex » Fri Dec 28, 2007 7:01 am

Hello,

i am just copying some stuff over ethernet to my server, i have the 1000 ethernet lan card on my x32 mobo with latest drivers. my network is only 100mbit, when i am copying at full speed (almost 10MByte/s) to home server cpu usage is almost 80% mostly by system process "SYSTEM" (PID 4) - i can't believe networking could eat up such amount of processor power... (harddrive is in UDMA mode)

there must be some problem right?

eth card is INTEL PRO/1000 MT

driver looks like 8.7.9.0 24.10.2006, which is strange as i am almost sure i installed latest driver recently, which was from late 2007... maybe it's the pack and the drivers for 1000MT weren't updated, will try to check once more on this...

but for now: how much of CPU eats copying of files over eth. at full speed on your side? thanx

edit: the drivers are really latest - see here... ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... ra09ww.txt

edit2: this happens when "uploading" (for example making a backup to network drive) - when "downloading" the cpu usage is only 5-10pct for SYSTEM process

Getting 2200BG cards work in IBM & adding extended channel support
