Possible processor problem?

#1 Post by cal4ever04 » Fri Nov 19, 2004 9:04 pm

Hi Everyone,
I've search the X-series forum several times, but I haven't found anything on this subject. Any kind of help would be great.

My bf has an x-40 Pentium M 1.2 LV, but for whatever reason, it usually runs at no more than 598 mhz (at most), and often dips down at 299 mzh (and this is when it's plugged in). He says that he's only seen his x-40 run at 1.2 a few times, and he's had his thinkpad for almost 6 months. The first time he got his thinkpad, it started running at 598 mhz.

I have an x-40 Pentium M 1.4 LV and it has always run at 1.4 (granted I only got my thinkpad yesterday).

Any ideas?

Thanks...

p.s.
Just to be thorough, we've run a norton, ad-aware and spybot. (I know those probably have nothing to do with whatever is causing the problem, but I thought I'd throw that out there anyway.)

It'll most likely be the setting in the battery maximiser. You can really customise it.

I've got my set to pretty much one default option:

1. on AC power, the processor is set to max, screen to Level 3, and everything else "off" (i.e., no sleeping, etc.)

2. If i suddently switch to battery, i've got the processor set to slow right down to "slow", the screen dims to Level 2, and the hard drive spins down after something like 5 min or so.

Try setting the power property to Always On. That is a ThinkPad property (not a Battery Maximizer property). On any ThinkPad I have owned, Always On causes the processor to run at maximum. If that works, then select the power property that suits your operation best. I use the basic ThinkPad default. My T41 runs at 600MHz most of the time, but any time I call on the CPU for an intensive application, it jumps right up to 1.8Ghz. There were recent BIOS / Embedded Controller updates for speedstep to work properly when running on battery, so check your firmware updates.

Where is the battery maximizer located?
I tried the Power Options method and it works... but it gets annoying changing the settings all the time when I go from AC to battery.
I basically want it to run at 1.2 when I'm on ac and vary when on battery.

I have had sort of the same problem with my Dell. For it to run at max speed I have to start the machine with the power supply attached. If I switch to battery use I have to restart the machine with the power supply attached again... Try to start the machine with the power supply attached and change the power use settings.
