X23 HDD in an X31? How about memory?

#1 Post by Mahatma » Fri Dec 28, 2007 7:57 pm

I have an X23 that I souped up (memory and HDD) and then... I donno, must have gotten careless with, and now have a line on the screen. It's not my main machine -- I want something light for traveling, especially for EVDO online access/.

I'm thinking of getting an X31 (a little faster, and USB 2.0) and the idea situation would be for me to be able to just throw in my X23's hard drive. Yes, I know there will be messy driver issues. Maybe I'm not as worried about those as I should be...

But will the drive fit? Will X23 memory fit in the X31?

To go a step more crazy, how about a HDD and memory swap with a X40?

Thanks for any thoughts. I forget what transition I once tried (putting an X23 HDD into a T30 perhaps?) which looked like it should work (the drive physically could be squished in) but didn't work in practice.

Thanks for any advice.

X23's memory is sdr ,and x31's is ddr so X23's memory can't fit in X31

the hdd can fit in X31---IDE , 2.5"

x40 use the DDR memory and 1.8" hdd

I don't think the driver issues will be simple, mainly because the different chipset will most likely keep Windows from booting at all.

The ram won't fit, it's SDRAM on the X23 vs DDR on the X31/X40.

You have to wipe the drive, period. When I took a X21 drive to a X22, got BSOD. The drivers are just too different. I couldn't go from a X23 to a X24 without a wipe, same BSOD problem, though it got farther. SAFE mode won't even work. Not even attemptable with the many differences between the X2x and the X3x series like USB 2.0 support, ATA-6, and several other things.

The drive itself is just fine in the X3x series. The memory is a toss as "aaa" and "heasion" said. Don't worry though, you can max out an X31 and X32 at 2Gb for only a hundred bucks, not bad. The new memory will be several times faster, and much much more of it. Think of all the extra windows you can open!

In addition, Windows doesn't allow you to just swap out systems like that. To do so, reasons Microsoft, would be an invitation to piracy--activate a copy of Windows, image the drive, and put it in whatever machine you please. At least, that's the reasoning I've heard. All I know is that, hardware compatibility aside, you can't drop a hard drive into a new system and carry on using your Windows installation.

It's a pain, especially when you only want to replace your motherboard and have to reinstall everything as a result.

Re-Activation

Yeah, if you got far enough in, you would get a "Re-Activation Request", as if you have the right to refuse. Actually, windows makes up a little key that has some degrees of freedom in it, and checks it on start up. If you fall outside the allowed degrees of freedom, you reactivate. HOWEVER, you can continue to use the windows. Recently I changed out the video in a desktop after the last change out of the harddrive, I now was a potential thief, apparently. All I had to do was call the 800-stopstealing err... the 800-reactivate line and my system was fine in just a few minutes. I just hate people who think that a 5% theft rate justifies accusing everyone of theft. Oh, well....

Re-Activation, Redux

I should have said the key is made of values it sees in the hardward makeup of the computer with MB and Video cards in high priority. Over the years the RAM configuration and HD have dropped because these are the most commonly changed.

You get to run Windows after the reActivation request for, I think, another 30 days.

Ah, but there are work arounds ... try this, for example: http://forums.pcapex.com/hardware_advic ... puter.html
