X23 - question about updating the BIOS

#1 Post by LionelMandrake » Sat Jan 05, 2008 12:58 am

Hello all! I just yesterday bought my first PC ever - a ThinkPad X23 model 2662. I've been running on ApplePower for about 20 years now and decided it's time to check out what the other side has to offer.

But I have a problem understanding how exactly can I update the BIOS. I apparently need to update something called "Embedded Controller Program" at the same time? My BIOS is version 1.26 and the newest one seems to be 1.32. So how do I update the embedded controller and the BIOS at the same time?

My ThinkPad came with somekind of a dock that has a DVD-ROM and a diskette drive in it so I can make use of those if necessary.

Thank you for your help!

What they are really referring to is making sure to update the Bios and Embed to a coordinated level before you try to boot up anything else.

So get the latest Embed and the Latest Bios, Prepare both on their own diskette, BEFORE YOU UPDATE EITHER. Now use the diskette to update the Embed first (says so in one of the Lenovo instructions, I even think they say it here somewhere), then as soon as the Embed is done immediately use the Bios updater. You are done.

I thought at one point you had to go up the chain and update them in order, but you can just go to the top. Every IBM/Lenovo machine I get now, I just immediately update to the latest nonBeta Embed and Bios. (I do a lot of stuff for the nieces and nephews and in-laws. My wife has a big family.)

Update Order

Well, it kept nagging at me. I found the notes on the order of update:
- This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS version 3.01 (or higher). The BIOS is available in an additional package, a link is provided below.
- If you should need to update your BIOS and Embedded Controller at the same time, update the BIOS first.
- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.
now this is on an X31, but I am pretty sure I have seen the same thing on the X23 and X24.

Thank you both. It seems we have two opinions here. Is there a possibility that I'll brick my computer? I've fallen in love with this little thing - It's Apple-like with its simplicity and the way everything in its design has a purpose.
