Internal Wireless X24

#1 Post by rckrchrdsn » Sun Jan 06, 2008 5:33 pm

My last X24 is asking me to make it internally WiFi. I think it wants to compete with the X31s. I saw a Internet/Modem PCI card for the X24 (checked the FRU on line) and a wireless card that goes where the modem went (again, I checked the FRU just to be sure, but it is listed in the X24 parts lists). What do you think my chances of finding a LCD Bezel and a set of antenna are? OR does anyone here have a great work around? OR maybe I should forget the hassle and sell the cards off. My X24 is watching so I can't say much more...
Main X31 Vista Ult 1.6Mhz CPU 2Gb RAM 160Gb HD Artheros 54Mbit Wifi,
3-X31s XP, X24 XP, X22 XP, X21 XP, lots of parts for all of them.

I haven't heard something like that but it sound interesting though.
I think it hard to find LCD Bezel and a set of antenna for X24 but
I may be wrong.
Hope someone can give a hint or we have to keep it simple. ^_^

WiFi Bezel

There is an FRU for it but where to find it would be the kicker!

That X24 keeps staring at me. I think I will have to put it in my closet and hope it doesn't start something up with the hangers.

Finding the Bezel

#7 Post by rckrchrdsn » Mon Jan 07, 2008 8:09 pm

HarryC, when I tried Googling about 5 months ago, I could find antenna, but not Bezels. I am excited. I emailed them today. That would give me a the cards, antenna, and bezel. Looking at the parts list I can see anything else. The only issue I could see is where the antenna leads cross from the LCD to the MB. There don't seem to be any special parts mentioned.

I have done an internal wireless "upgrade" to my x24. It wasn't the cleanest thing because I didn't get any of the IBM FRU's for the "authorized" wireless components like the x24 antennas or LCD bezel. Basically what I did was buy the wireless 802.11b/56k modem combo card and then a couple of spare thinkpad T40 wireless antennas off of ebay. I then took apart the x24 and plugged in the antennas to the two pots on the card. I had to trim some of the metal off the bottom of the antennas and then ran then behind the LCD screen and electrical taped them into position. I ran the wires from the antennas down the back of the LCD and through the hinges on both sides. Hooked them up to the pots on the card and screwed everything back together. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions let me know.

The wireless works very well now. Only 802.11b speeds but connects well to the wireless signal and works. And all of this without a PCMIA card or USB stick sticking out of the side or back of the laptop.

Of course, now I'm ready to upgrade a little bit in terms of performance, so I'm looking into the x60 series. Anyone want this laptop?

Welcome to the Forum mrpeaches!

Nice suggestion and work around. Where the antenna comes from isn't nearly as import as locations once installed. If you'd like to sell your X24 you can list it in the Marketplace conference. If your not sure what to ask for it just ask the members what it's worth in that conference. You will get honest evaluations from the many buyers and sellers.
