Has anyone tried to install 4GB of RAM into the X3 series?

X2/X3/X4x series specific matters only

Has anyone tried to install 4GB of RAM into the X3 series?

#1 Post by epu » Mon Jan 14, 2008 8:56 pm

Being that there's a forum for which someone inserted a 2GB RAM stick into a X41 and it worked (giving them 2.5GB as opposed to the 1.5GB advertised), has anyone tried this in the X31?

Someone mentioned something about the chipset only allowing a certain amount of memory in the X41 and them trying the 2GB stick anyway, just to find out that it worked.

Imagine 4GB on an X31 or X32 running XP. It'd fly!

Pretty sure it's a no go. 855 chipset takes only 1gb of ddr.

edit: 1gb sticks of ddr

XP will only support up to 3gb anyway. You would have to upgrade to Vista, and there goes your performance boost.

I've seen X60s advertised with 4GB of RAM running XP (and I know that XP only recognized 3GB).

I was just wondering if anyone tried it. Lol. Thanks.

Actually you would have to upgrade to a 64 bit OS. Both XP and Vista are available in 64 bit.

They exist, but are not compatible with any laptops. Thankfully rare so we don't get mixed up.

Someone one this forum did it before, iirc.

Well then . . . .

How does this explain those guys putting a 2GB RAM stick in their X41s. Where are they finding these RAM sticks?

It was just a thought. IBM advertised the MAX RAM as being 1.5 GB on the X4 series, and that ONLY a 1GB stick could be used MAX on an X4.

Since the same was advertised for the X3 (2GB, I know that 1GB was probably advertised in the beginning as well), it'd only be suitable to try a 2GB stick in an X31/32.

Perhaps, I'll purchase one and see what happens!

Because the X4* has the 915 chipset and DDR2.

I've tried an 8 chip 1gb stick with the 855 before, it did not work. Since a 2gb stick would have 16 of these chips-that-don't-work, well, I don't think it'll work. Normal 1gb sticks have 16 smaller chips instead of 8 big ones.

Oops, right, not quite sure what I was thinking when writing that.

Anyway, 32 bit Vista also will not support more than 3.0-3.3 GB of RAM, so there wouldn't be any performance boost at all.

If that's the case, wouldn't you need a 1GB stick in order to install 2GB . . . . .?

Thanks for the response. I was simply stating that someone mentioned that they couldn't use 1GB sticks because they wouldn't work. Aren't there only two slots for RAM sticks? You'd need two 1GB sticks to get 2GB.

The X41 was also advertised as having one slot only available for a stick of 1GB max . .

I couldn't use 8-chip 1gb sticks. 16-chip 1gb sticks work fine.
