X31 Loses HDD Connection - Can This Be Fixed?

#1 Post by russinla » Wed Jan 16, 2008 10:45 am

My X31 has started failing to recognize the HDD - this either manifests as the BSOD a few minutes into use, or on booting it reports it can't see the OS.

Is this a common problem/ an easy fix? Could I do it myself or what should I expect to pay a professional?

Many thanks in advance.

Well if it's a dying HD that's causing the problem then it's an easy fix.
Of course there's always the slight chance that it's the motherboard...

No - it's not the HDD: I swapped it out with the one from my X22 and I get the same results.

Hi

have you tried any of the HDD testing tools? Ones which boot from DOS are best. There is the IBM one which I ran on my system.

I don't know if this helps any, but I've been having lockups on my x31 which has culminated in its 'demise'

I started suspecting drivers (after installing directX for a USB TV) but its now apparently dead.

the reason I'm replying with this is that of my experience with laptops I now think that the x31 is the one of flakiest things made (ranking with Dell). I just bought another one BUT only because it was 1) cheap 2) came with 3 year warranty. I think I'll be needing that

Looking at the number of X31 issues on this forum, I'm inclined to agree. I used to be a Thinkpad zealot, but this experience is making me change my tune.

I've had 2 X31's and on eX32 with absolutely no issues, all out of warranty. Since this is a support forum, you see people coming here to post problems, but they are a minute percent of the machines out there.
