X24 with W2K vs WXP

#1 Post by Paul88 » Sat Jan 19, 2008 12:14 pm

Hello there,

I follow the forum for a while and kind of impress what you guys are doing here. I'm currently using X24, PIII1.06, 640 mb, 80 GB HD, WXP SP2. I'm satisfied with my unit so far but just sometime
it show a little lag time if I use multi-applications at the same time.

Can someone tell me is that a good idea if my unit have W2K instead of WXP? What's the major different between both OS?

Appreciate folks,

Paul

I used to have 2000 on my X24 but I quickly replaced it with XP. I've got a 1.13GHz PIII, but your computer have significantly more RAM than mine--640mb vs 256. I don't know if there's no lag on mine or if I've just gotten used to it, but I find XP to be quite usable. The differences between the two OSes are pretty minimal, as they both use the same basic structure.

I suspect that any slow performance you're having is just the product of using a five-year-old computer with limited power. For the most part, there's not much us X24 users can do performance-wise besides upgrading to a newer laptop.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

Two things you can do, apart from switching to W2K...

- Increase (manually) the amount of virtual RAM (set the limits as starting at 3000Gb and ending at 4090 since 4095 is the max I believe)
- If you're not using a 7200rpm HDD, try testing one out. It could make significant difference.

I've run both W2K and WXP on my past X24s and haven't noticed that much of a difference.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for your response.

j-dawg, did you get a new battery yet? ^_^
I want to keep x24 for a year or two before jump ship,
as you know I just bought a new battery and upgrade HD to 80 GB as well. It's enough for me at this point. I just use my laptop
for normal surfing, office stuff so this unit just keeping do a great job for the past 5 years.

ajkula66, how can I manually set ram setting like that?
Do I need to use any specific software?
My new HD is 80 GB, 5400rpm. I love it.
May be the next one, I can go with 7200 rpm.

BTW, do you know how's the warranty transferred worked?
Does it automatically follow the laptop? or is there anything
to do with this?

Thanks all, have a great day.

Paul

Go to Control Panel>System>Properties>Advanced>Performance>Performance options>advanced>virtual memory
