X32 2GhZ. Fan on all the time? What the hell??
X32 2GhZ. Fan on all the time? What the hell??
I just replaced my X31 1.4 with a X32 2.0 GHz. When I set the power scheme to Power Source Optimized with the CPU set to Non-Adaptive (2.0 GHz all the time), the fan is ALWAYS on!?!?!
I thought the fan was only supposed to come on when the CPU was at 100%?? Yes, my CPU is set to maximum speed, but I'm not even using 20% of the CPU most of the time.
Why is the fan always on?!? Is there a way to set it like my X31 so it only comes on when the CPU approaches 100% use?
I feel like I'm under my mother's blow dryer with this thing, lol!

Thanks for replying AAA. Well, the thing is, I want it to constantly run at 2 gHz, but without the fan running. On my X31, the fan would only run WHEN THE CPU USAGE WAS 100%.
My X31 was 1.4 GHz, and even when I pushed it to 1.4gHz, the fan never came on unless the CPU LOAD WAS 100%.
Maybe this is a Lenovo thing? Lol.

Simplifying a bit, the fan comes on when the temperature of the CPU exceeds a given threshold.I thought the fan was only supposed to come on when the CPU was at 100%??
Everything else equal, a CPU running at 2 GHz will generate more heat than a CPU running at 1.4 GHz at any load. Evidently in your case the difference is enough to require the CPU fan to run at all times.
Try to clean the CPU heatsink in case it has accumulated dust that may be hampering cooling. You may also want to consider using a fan utility to tweak when the fan runs. Remember to watch the temperatures.

Hi epu, just my 2 cents - I think you don't need the CPU to be running at 2GHz all the time. If you set "adaptive" it will speed-up whenever needed and while idle it will run on 600MHz so the temperature and battery drain will drop. It's Intel's SpeedStep http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep. Maybe you know it but...
I'd also suggest to use Notebook Hardware Control http://www.pbus-167.com/ where you can control the fan speed and also the CPU voltage. I've been able to decrease my T41's Intel Pentium M 735 Dothan (1.7GHz) voltage by 0.25V and the temperature dropped by 10°C (= 18°F) and I get no stability issues.
Good luck!

i am running x31 with 2ghz x32 mobo, the fan is on much more often... it's not a problem to reach 85C - critical is 91C (emergency system poweroff) - i started using NHC with Thinkpad API script, fan is on all the time, but i can get decent temperatures (also applying a new layer of thermal paste helped a lot)
