also im about to upgrade it.
im looking for 2 512mb ram chips. what chips have people had luck with, my t21 was very selective.
also it is safe to run a 7200rpm drive in the x?
thanks guys

By any chance, is your X31 an IBM certified used machine?
In any event, you can try these modules from Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts. ... &submit=Go.
They should work. And, if they don't, then Crucial will take them back.

I haven't tried a 7200 rpm drive, so cannot tell you. I saw one mention recently on this forum and the person has upgraded an X31 with 60GB 7200 rpm drive. And he reports significant improvements in performance for what he does. (Can't recall the details of his post; but a search through the forums will lead you to it.) I have the 5400 rpm that comes standard with my system and am perfectly happy with it for what I do, which is a lot of word processing, some light database work, ocassional low end graphics work, & minimal dvd authoring. Therefore the short (and probably unhelpful) answer is: it depends on what you use your computer for.Blake wrote:

I know I say this far too often
but I've been using a 7k60 with my X31 since july and both the X31 and 7k60 are still doing fine. Heat isn't a problem because most of the disk's heat is dissipated by the magnesium base and a little heatspreader fitted in the keyboard bezel.
Battery life is still great - average power consumption when it's just spinning is around one watt, as it should be (thanks mobilemeter) and I still get anywhere between 4-5 hours of use on one battery.
Speed is faster, I noticed the jump from 4200 > 5400 and I noticed the change from 5400 > 7200, everything is slightly more responsive and this makes it much closer in speed to a desktop system.
The only trade-off I've noticed is the noise that the drive makes, the slight whoosh sound - like a fan, coming from the disk. Certainly lots quieter than any desktop though.
I use my X31 similarly to how you're intending to use yours, and it does a great job of it, just don't bother playing any 3d games on it.

just the standard main battery, although I don't have much luck getting hold of good ones, my best X31 battery only has 42 Wh capacity (should be 48Wh).
I'm pretty cautious with power management when I'm running off the battery, so the CPU is usually locked at 600mhz and I don't have a USB mouse plugged in, the screen is usually dimmed when it doesnt need to be bright as well.

If you already have a 40G 5.400 RPM HDD then you probably wont see a lot of difference. I replaced the old 6G 4,200 RPM HDD in my T20 and it made a world of difference in performance. It wasn't just the RPM increase but the 8MB Cache vs. 2MB Cache. There are a lot of larger HDDs with only 2MB of Cache. HDD Cache makes a lot of difference in performance.Blake wrote: what about hd suggestions
Will a 7200rpm be much faster than a 5400 or its not worth it..
either a 60 gig 7200 or a 80 gig 5400
My X31 has a Hitachi 5,400 RPM 40G HDD with 8MB Cache. I tried a Toshiba MK4026GAX 5,400 RPM HDD with 16MB Cache. The Toshiba "seems" a little faster but makes a lot more noise than the super quiet Hitachi HDD.
Another question, do you really need a 60G or 80G HDD?
Chas.
