802.11n?
802.11n?
Ahoy everyone,
I just purchased an x31/1.6 from an ebay outlet and have found that the Cisco (b) card is somewhat lacking. I'm sure the x31 is too old to have the antennae built-in, but I'd like to know if there is an antenna+card solution to boost the wireless bandwidth.
Thanks!

I am fairly certain that all X31's have built in antenna.

But none have the antennas required for 802.11n...mpcook wrote:I am fairly certain that all X31's have built in antenna.
iborg: you may be able to place the third antenna under the keyboard - I haven't personally tried this, however. How about just a 802.11g card?

First of all, welcome to the forum, iborg!
I second what mpcook has said. The antennas are definitely there...
The mini PCI slot is under the keyboard, and will take a variety of cards, with or without "1802" hack.
More people will chime in with their experiences, I'm sure, but the last X31 that I've had had factory installed Atheros a/b card and it worked pretty well. My assumption is that you could install a/b/g version of the same card with no issues.

Yeah, I'm aware that some have the b/g antennae, but I was referring to the n. Under the keyboard... I'll look under the hood to see if there is enough space.qviri wrote:But none have the antennas required for 802.11n...mpcook wrote:I am fairly certain that all X31's have built in antenna.

I'm just hoping that the n-cards don't use some new form-factor.

There are one or two old-style MiniPCI N cards that will fit in the X31. However, there is still the BIOS approved wireless card list, and you will have to use the no1802 hack to use a wireless card not approved by IBM. Don't accidentally get a MiniPCIe, those are all over the place and will not fit.
It might be easier to get an IBM approved a/b/g card.

Yeah. Your choice is the Atheros AR5001 based 31P9701. That's the one that does 802.11 a/b/g...or there's a card from Sparklan which does b/g/n, WMIA-207GN (I believe) which requires an extra antenna for diversity control. You can buy a spare antenna off ebay and retrofit your '31 to work with it. You'll need to use the no-1802 hack to deal with that card though.

Re: 802.11n?
I just bought a Linksys Refurbished WPC600N-RM Adapter from the Cisco online outlet store for 19.99 and it works great in my x60s, it's a PC Card but installs instantly and works fine, and it's low risk (cheap). It's dual band ABGN.
