Drawbacks of X40
I aggree with them
Drawbacks
Not perfect, the X40 can't dodge a few nagging issues.
1-The lighter and space-saving 4,200 rpm, 1.8-inch miniature hard drive impaired the X40's performance.
2-The switch from an ATI Mobility Radeon in the previous ThinkPad X31 to Intel's integrated video doesn't help performance.
3-The X40 lacks a FireWire port, which is useful to those with devices such as an iPod or DV camera
I think FireWire port not important for me but I liked to be placed better HDD and more RAM expand (max=2 GB)
VGA well it is OK but I did not use ATI (X31 ?) I do not know
this VGA enough to me

Which is why I bought an X31 long after the X40 was made available. This X31 is my absolute favourite laptop since I can use a 7k60 in it and I make good use of the firewire and USB 2 ports
Although I wish the X31 had an SD slot instead of CF and a better video chip (this 16 meg radeon mobility is pitiful for anything but 2d), but I guess you can't have everything...

after using my friends X40 for a weekend, i can honestly say im happy i didnt get it, its a nice machine, but the only thing it has going for it is size and just isnt worth the added cost. I got my T42 for less money and its 2x faster, more futureproof, has just about same batt life and a much higher res screen (i HATE XGA), and integrated optical drive
T42 Owner (2374-3VU)
Strange, but to me you just can't compare the x40 and the T series - they're two different machines for ostensibly different markets. The x40 is not a performance machine because it isn't designd to be as such. You wouldn't buy a Nissan Micra and expect 0-60 times of under 5 seconds, would you?
I use an X40 for writing, communication and even doing figures and plates for books/articles (I'm an academic). I don't play games on it (don't have the time, really).
It's plenty fast for the average businessperson.

The lower weight would have been a good reason for me to choose the X40 instead of X31. The on-board vga instead of ATI would have been OK because I am using my thinkpads on a dock II with an external vga-card (dual-screen solution).
But: X40 doesn't support the common IBM docking solution. Only the Ultrabase X4 can be connected. DockII, MiniDock and PortReplicator won't work.
I couldn't believe when I read these facts in the data sheet the first time.
So I have to buy a thinkpad x31 although is weights more and although I am not in need of the special features like the ati graphic card.
So, why is IBM changig this specification and not continuing the older docking solutions working from X2x, T2x and A2x series till today with nearly all thinkpads? Is the architecture of the cpu a reason and isn't there a possibility to make the board compatible or has IBM just stop to "think"???
What will be in the future (if IBM still sells thinkpads then (not sure about that)...) ???
