X31: BMDC200 Blutooth not working...or is it?

#1 Post by findrivr » Sat Feb 16, 2008 5:50 pm

I just purchased a used X31 [2672JHU] running XP pro, SP2, no upgrades or changes to factory config.; everything worked great out of the box until I activated BT [Func+F5]. As expected, the BT status indicator below the LCD illuminates and I have 2 BT logos showing on the system task bar; one dark blue which is the BT device on board the X31, namely the Actiontec BMDC200. The other is a lightblue BT logo and I presume it is the status all external BT devices which may or may not be recognized by the X31 BMDC200.
Currently, I have no BT activity between the X31 and for example, my Nokia cell phone. Although the BT indicator says it is on and the BT Config dialogue specifies the h/w is present and functional, I get no activity or recognition. Before trying out any BT connections, I noticed ther was no BT s/w on the Start bar or under programs. I presume that whomever owned the machine before me had just done a basic XP re-install. Not even any ThinklPad utilities present, so I went to the IBM support site and updated the BIOS [it was a couple of iterations old], embedded controller and BT drivers. I looked under the KB at the WiFi Card [Phillips] and the BT card, which is an Actiontec BMDC200 p/n 91P7297 305. Windows SysInfo lists the card under Components>Network>Adapter as: BT Device {Pers Area N/w}
Installed:yes, but the Adapter type [brand?] is not available, as well as the PNP Dev ID, IP Addr,IP Sumnet, Dflt IP Gatewy, DHCP Servr, etc.; the DHCP enabled is 'yes' and the service name is 'Bthpan' and the Last reset date was yesterday, when I last tried all the MS BT driver uninstall etc., according to a link of instructions from here at TPs.com.
The next entry on the list of components is the BT LAN Access Server Driver; Installed: 'yes', last rest: yesterday, same time, PNP Dev ID: Root/Net/0000, Service name: BTWDNDIS. The remaining fiels for IP addresses, etc are specified numerically, except for Default IP gateway, which is 'Not Available'
That is all that is listed under adapters for BT in the SysInfo.
Well, suffice to say, I'm very lost. I expected BT to be nearly 'Plug and Play', but I've now run the PC Doctor h/w suite of tests [outside of Windows] and the system passed on all categories. Then I tried reloading the newer specified drivers from IBM [Widcomm BTW 1.4] and still nothing.
Also, Device Manager specifies that the IBM BT II exists and is enabled.
Net time spent trying to activate or create BT PAN is now approaching 5 hours since beginning, and still no clues. I'm totally lost on this one-
Any suggestions or links appreciated.

BTW, while looking up my BT data to post here on this issue, I just noticed that within the d/l of the BT driver package fr/IBM support, is a WidComm User Guide .pdf. I'll dig through that 50 page doc and see what happens, but in the mean time, please feel free to offer any help.

As an addendum to my above topic, I searched in FAQ here and haven't found a succesful solution yet for IBM TP's and internal BT configuration. The most I've found is the support link from IBM specifying the use of the WIDCOMM drivers and to remove the MS drivers. Maybe I just have a defective BT card, or the config on these is much more difficult than anyone is aware of.
As an alternative, does anyone have a link or reference to a tried and true method for configuration of a BTDC200 in an X31.
I thought I followed all of the IBM special instructions, as well as adding the WIDCOMM drivers, but I can't get it to discover any BT deviceseventhough it lists the card under Bluetooth Devices as an 'IBM Integrated BT II' device.
Oh well.
