Please help with X31 wireless configuratiom

#1 Post by visitor » Tue Feb 19, 2008 10:10 am

Hi all,

My X31 (2672-PP4) has an Intel Pro 2100 3B mini PCI wireless card.

I have bought a Netgear FWAG114 wireless router that has "tri-mode" compatibility : a,b,g

When enabling the Intel 2100 in the X31, I only get 11mbps connectivity, and I can't figure out how to make the two things work in "a" mode.

Sorry if I'm saying something obvious and stupid here, but I would like to make use of the "a" mode which supposedly gets out of the way of common 2.4 cordless phones.

Appreciate any word on this.

Augusto

There is no such thing as a stupid question.

A quick google search for your wireless card revealed that this is a 802.11b network card. That would certainly explain why it only connects a 11Mbps speed.

Reference: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_PRO ... CI_Adapter

You will need a wireless card that supports 802.11a in order to connect at the 5GHz. Beware that now there are plenty of cordless phones that use this band as well.

IHTH.

Thanks for patiently clarifying this.
Guess I'll just live up with it. 11mbs seems OK for internet while I can hook by RJ-45 whenever I need 100mbs.
Though of upgrading to a newer card but I'm expecting a MacBook Pro to handle pro audio so the need might not justify until I feel conviced by a new lighter and cooler model by Lenovo (so far confused by X61 and X300).
And thanks also for pointing me to the Thinkwiki site, new to me.
all the best

FYI, Atheros a/b cards that were stock on some versions of X31 are dirt cheap nowadays...there's one in the marketplace part of the forum for $7...you can't beat that.

Thanks George, I saw that listing but missed mentioning that.

Obrigado.

Thanks too for the a/b card tip.
But something crossed my mind: would a USB or cardbus wireless adapter work well in an X31 ?
I ask this because I could use the miniPCI slot for a different purpose, such as installing a low-profile 650 Matrox card, that would give the X31 the DVi and TV-out it lacks. I know some people did that in the old Dock but I guess it should work in the X31's slot as well.

I don't see any reason why USB wireless won't work with your X31. I believe the X31 card supports 32bit PCMCIA cards so the cardbus should work as well.

I have no experience with the 650 Matrox card so I will let someone else comment on that.
