X31 supports DDR only, doesn't it? 266 or 333 according to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X31.

It won't even fit the socket let alone work.

Yes you can, it'll just run slower.

Were DDR400 SODIMMS actually widely produced and marketed?

They're around, and not rare. It's just that few laptops officially supported them, so they usually didn't come to builtin. Of course, the aftermarket memory makers marketed them.

In summary ...

Your laptop uses memory which is in a DDR SODIMM package.

DDR ram is backward and forward competible.

i.e. DDR333 ram works in a DDR400 slot, at DDR333 speeds.

In the same way,

DDR400 ram works in a DDR333 slot, at DDR333 speed.

Now, the X31 motherboard only supports speeds of up to PC2100, DDR266.
