ultrabase x3 and changing cd rom advise pls

#1 Post by kendo2222 » Tue Feb 26, 2008 10:10 pm

hi, i have a x31 and recently got a x3 base wiv no cd drive. i have just ordered a cheapish ultrabay 2000 dvd drive from fleabay. what i wanna know is can i unscew the dvd drives outer adaptor and use a cdr from say a sony vaio or fujitsu laptop and scew the adaptor bak onto that to use on the x3, as i have done this method with various laptops and it seems to work in most, but i found in some cases the drives would sometimes not detect , especially on the fujitsu. i know most cd drives are similar in design but does the ibms encounter this problem or is it a case of just finding the right drivers. thanks

In theory I think yes, provided the the adapter can correctly connect to the plug, but according to what a sales guy told me time ago, some models/brands would not be able to boot.

hi again, ok i just got the dvd drive that i ordered FRU P/N 27L3755 was told it was ultrabay 2000 which i assumed would fit the x3, but it wouldnt slide into my x3 base. it was too bulky at the cd opening end. although i did take the atapi connector off from ibm drive and was able to screw it to a spare dvd drive i had, but i noticed when sliding into the x3 the actual connector on the original drive and mine would not slot into the x3 connector, it seems the x3 connector is directly in middle and the drive adaptor is slightly to the left. on inspection the connections seem the same but i guess the older cdrom models dont match up witht the x3. i have another cdrw/dvd comin that i ordered which did say was compatible with the x3, so hopefully this fits and also i can compare sockets and try to swop with other drives and let you know outcome. thanks for your reply.

I think that that dvd you bought ( 27L3755 ) is for a Thinkpad 600, so it's not ultrabay 2000 compatible.

Second.

Always make sure that ultrabay adapter is correct version. At this point hope you'll should be able to have money back, or Ultrabay 2k replacement from same seller...

However, rather then buying drive/adapter, look first for optical drive (DVD) you going to use in Ultrabay2k then look on ebay for model which has matching bezel, eject button / hole, led positions... It seems that there are many variants of this elements but in reality there only few different bezels for Ultrabay 2000 optical drives.

This way you have *proper* bezel in x3 and, not less important, intact (original) bezel for use in another system.

I may say that old Hitachi DVD Ultrabay 2k bezel (cca y2001), matches well newer NEC/Sony-Optiarc DVD-RW drives.

And if you got cheap proper bezel with dead drive that makes sense as well, otherwise there some ebay offerings for 13-15 EURO just for rails, connector and bezel which is maybe bit too much.

hope it helps

i saw this description on here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=012 which said ultrabay 2000 , as i have never had a x3 for my x31 until this week i didnt know that the connectors where different from what i saw in many pics they appear to look same adaptors thus why i assumed ultrabay 2000 was all same. that was my intended purpose to just buy cheapest on site and swop about with my spares but didnt work , i have another one on its way 08K9868, this i checked should work fingers crossed. thanks
